he decided to return back to Taiwan in order to be reunited with his family and to graduate from High School. Its difficult to hold on to the kids when you have no sponsor and they have no allowances ..... its great that before the tournament proper Energen for the love of the kids returned to sponsor the team.

SEA U18 Basketball: Singapore fall 43-54 to Indonesia in second game
    By Amir Yusof/Red Sports

Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, June 27, 2012 — The Singapore U18s suffered heartbreak as they were defeated 54-43 by the Indonesia U18s in a tightly contested game in the South-east Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) Under-18 Championship.

The defeat virtually ends Singapore’s chance of lifting this year’s championship, with the hosts yet to face regional powerhouses Philippines. Philippines beat Laos 124-28 in an earlier game played on the same day.

Juan Kokodiputro of Indonesia had a game-high 17 points while centre Delvin Goh had a team-high 16 for Singapore.

“Although I feel that we have done well tonight, we struggled to match the pressure defence tactics that the Indonesians employed. They pressed us hard and we simply could not cope, “said Delvin, who played virtually the entire game before succumbing to cramps midway in the final quarter.

“It is now very difficult for us to win this tournament but we will definitely try our best in all the remaining fixtures,” added Delvin, who impressed throughout but was outplayed. Delvin was also part of the Singapore Slingers roster in the third season of the ASEAN Basketball League.

The Singapore U18s did start the game brightly though, racing to a 5-0 lead before the Indonesian head coach Nathaniel Canson declared that he had enough and called for the first timeout of the game.

The move paid off handsomely as the Indonesians sprang into action, with their 202cm tall centre, Vincent Kokasih, proving to be more than a match for Delvin. As a result of their prolific free throw conversion rate, combined with Singapore’s abysmal performance from the line, the Indonesians managed to level the game at 11-11 going into the break.

At the start of the second quarter, Singapore’s Thng Jun Rong showed some sublime vision, throwing defence splitting passes time and time again to his teammates. As a result, Tan Jun Wei and Remus Low produced easy lay ups to give the home side a 26-20 lead going into the half-time interval.

The Indonesians, however, displayed their mettle in the third quarter. Jan Panagen and Juan Kokodiputra took control of the flow of the game as they led the visitors on a 10-point scoring streak, to go from trailing 20-28 to leading by two at 30-28.

The Indonesians employed in-the-face, full-court pressure defensive tactics which clearly left the hosts fazed as they failed to cope with the pace and guile of the opponents.

Holding a narrow five-point lead heading into the last quarter, the Indonesians played zonal defence and slowed the pace down. Panagen was frustrating the hosts, holding the ball well as he waited for the shot clock to count down. Such antics did not bode well for the home side who grew increasing tired as they were constantly chasing their markers off the ball.

When Delvin limped off, the Singapore team lost direction in their offensive play as they squandered numerous chances. Remus, who found himself in good shooting positions, failed to convert any of his opportunities, culminating in a disappointing evening for the forward who was prolific in the opening game against Laos.

The defeat leaves Singapore needing to win against Philippines and Malaysia to reignite any lingering hopes of clinching the championship.

That site hasn't been working the whole day. Yesterday, I got my scores from Jonas Terrado's Twitter account but I don't see any updates from him about the U18 this evening.

Energen Pilipinas survives host Singapore in SEABA U-18 tilt
    Mikkel Bolante, InterAKTV · Friday, June 29, 2012 · 12:09 am

After a 96-point drubbing of Laos in their first game, the Energen Pilipinas national youth team encountered much stiffer competition as they outlasted tournament hosts Singapore, 75-63, in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association Under-18 Championship.

The boys of coach Olsen Racela had to contend with a very game Singapore squad, led by 16-year-old Singapore Slingers player Delvin Goh. The hosts trailed by just five points at halftime, 35-30, as the Philippines struggled to put some distance between them and their opponents.

Singapore even managed to take a quarter, winning the third period, 22-20, to enter the fourth quarter down by just three.

But the Filipinos took control after that, handily winning the crucial fourth quarter to cruise to their second double-digit win.

Co-captain J-Jay Alejandro of National University led the Philippines with 13 points, including two three-pointers. Letran’s Rey Nambatac added 12 points while Kent Lao of UST scored 10. Big man Jay Javelosa of Reedley International finished with eight points and eight rebounds for the squad.

Goh led Singapore with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

The Philippines again dominated the rebounding battle with a 44-29 edge on the boards behind the efforts of Javelosa as well as UE’s RR De Leon and EAC guard Jorem Morada, who each had six boards. They also turned in a solid performance defensively, holding Singapore down to 36% shooting from the field.

Energen Pilipinas will play Malaysia next before wrapping up their campaign against a formidable Indonesian squad on Saturday.

I got the chance to watch the game versus singapore last night after my work. I was very impressed with RP teams athleticism especially Numbatac, Morada, Javelosa and Alejandro. I like also Kent Lao who played a very smart game with a commendable defense against the 6'7 Goh.

Sir we will be watching on Saturday against Indonesia. If this is your first time, try to be there as early as possible to get a comfortable seat and don't forget to bring cold water or drinks because the venue is more like a college gym with big air cooler and efan around.

U18 fends off Singapore, goes up to 2-0
    JOB B. DE LEON June 29, 2012 2:28pm

While it wasn’t on the level of their run-away win against Laos, the National Under-18 squad still did more than enough to hold off host country Singapore, 75-63 on Thursday evening, as the 8th South East Asian Basketball Association Championship tournament continued at the Singapore Basketball Center.

National University recruit JJ Alejandro III led the team with 13 points, Letran Squire Rey Mambatac added 12 points and five rebounds, and University of Santo Tomas Growling Tiger Kent Lao notched 10 points on 10 attempts.

The Nationals displayed the same strengths they showed in their 124-28 beatdown against the Laotians, outscoring the Singaporeans in the paint, 44-10, and in transition, 20-2. The easy points offset a miserable 3-for-17 clip by the team from beyond the arc, with two of those long bombs coming from Alejandro.

Delvin Goh led Singapore with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists on 6-for-10 shooting. Tay Ding Loon added 15 markers, while Jun Rong Thng had 13 points and five rebounds.

The Philippines was on fire to begin the game, forcing the Singaporeans into turnovers that resulted into a 10-nil run. But their opponents caught fire with under five minutes in the quarter as Thng and Goh combined to put up 13 markers for the Singaporeans, to trim the deficit to 16-13 after the period.

In the second quarter, the Philippines responded with an 8-1 run, scoring six of those in transition, to gain a 24-14 advantage midway through the period. The Singaporeans countered with a 12-4 run, propped up by a pair of treys from Chee Khan Liang and Thng to bring the score to 28-26. By the end of the half though, the Philippines still stood tall, extending their advantage to 35-30.

Alejandro opened the third period with five straight points to lead the Philippines in a 12-2 barrage. The Nationals built their largest lead of the game off another basket by Alejandro, 50-38, but John Ng countered for Singapore with a trey and scored five more points, including another triple, bolstering a 14-5 burst by the host team that found themselves trailed by just a triple once more, 55-52, heading into the final frame.

It was Lao’s turn to take up the cudgels in the fourth, spearheading an 11-3 burst with six points that brought their tally to 66-56 with a shade under five minutes left in the game. Singapore tried to rally behind a pair of baskets from Goh and Tay, but University of the East Red Warrior Mark Olayon scored in transition, and Reedley School’s Jay Javelosa , plus Alejandro, scored the team’s last seven points to help preserve the win for the National team.

The victory boosted the Philippine team to 2-0 in the standings. They face the Malaysians on Friday and the Indonesians on Saturday, completing four games in as many days. - AMD, GMA News

Days 3 of the 2012 SEABA U18 Championship

J-Jay Alejandro and the Filipinos didn't exactly have a cake walk against Junrong Thng and the Singaporeans.

    Notes:
The Filipinos had to scramble in the final 10 minutes before beating the Singaporeans and tying the Indons at the top of the standings with their second win in as many games.

J-Jay Alejandro scored 13 points and Rey Nambatac added 12 to lead the Philippines in a win that shouldn’t have been this close. The home team, however, showed great determination in never letting the Pinoys blow the game open. Seemingly more athletic than their Pinoy counterparts, the Singaporean frontline gave Kent Lao and Jay Javelosa all they could handle. Delvin Goh led the home squad’s charge, scoring 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting while also grabbing 7 rebounds and dishing out 5 assists. His diminutive partner, Junrong Thng, continued to impress at the playmaker position, scoring 13 points to go along with 7 boards, 3 triples, and 2 dimes. Despite having a tough time, Lao and Javelosa still gave a good account of themselves, pairing up for 18 points and 10 rebounds.

    PHILIPPINES over SINGAPORE, 75-63

    PHI 75 - Alejandro 13, Nambatac 12, Lao 10, Javelosa 8, Cani 7, Rivero 6, De Leon 5, Morada 5, Olayon 5, Bonleon 4, Suarez 0, Go 0

    SIN 63 - Goh 17, Tay 15, THng 13, Ng 8, Toh 5, Chee 3, Tan 2, Wong 0, Low 0, Chun 0, Chan 0, Ang 0

    QS: 16-13, 35-30, 55-52, 75-63

    Notable Performances:

    Delvin Goh (SIN) - 17pts, 7rebs, 5asts, 1blk

we should never be complacent. frankly if malaysia, singapore, indonesia and thailand invest serious money in basketball we might just get screwed. that, of course is predicated on the rise of basketball's popularity in these countries. So, apart from routinely destroying them in international tournaments we in the Philippines must always win the ABL Championship - to show that THEY CAN NEVER CATCH UP ON US, no matter how rich they may be hehehe.
