SEABA Under-18: Energen Pilipinas whips Malaysia to book FIBA Asia seat
    Mikkel Bolante, InterAKTV · Friday, June 29, 2012 · 11:25 pm

The Energen Pilipinas national youth team booked their third straight win in the tournament after whipping Malaysia, 84-65, in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association Under-18 Championships in Singapore.

With the win, the Philippines ensured they would finish no lower than 2nd in the tournament, thus qualifying for the 22nd FIBA Asia Under-18 Championships to be held in Ulan Bator, Mongolia later this year. The top three finishers in the SEABA tilt are assured seats in the Asian meet.

Mario Bonleon, the top scorer in the Philippines’ 96-point win in their opener against Laos, again led the team in scoring with 16 points. Co-captain J-Jay Alejandro scored 13 and Mark Olayon had 12 while big man Jay Javelosa finished with eight points, 14 rebounds and two blocks.

Liew Kit Hoow and Lian Wei Loo led Malaysia with 11 and 10 points, respectively, but combined to shoot just 8-of-23 (34.8%) from the field. Malaysia as a team shot just 32%.

But it wasn’t easy pickings for Filipinos, at least at the start of the game. Energen Pilipinas led by just three points at the end of the first quarter and saw their lead cut down to one, 43-42, at the half.

The Philippines buckled down in the second half, pushing their lead back up to double-digits before the end of the third quarter and holding Malaysia to just eight points in the final period as they turned the close encounter into a rout.

The Filipinos again dominated the inside, grabbing a 48-28 edge in rebounding and a 38-22 advantage in points in the paint.

The final task for the Olsen Racela-helmed squad will be similarly unbeaten Indonesia in a virtual championship match. Both teams enter the last day having swept their games against Malaysia, Laos and host Singapore and will decide the title in their head-to-head.

The Philippines will be looking to defend the championship that the Kiefer Ravena-led Nokia Pilipinas team won in the last SEABA tournament two years ago.

Philippines Defeated Malaysia In SEABA U18 Basketball
    By Kristina Caramel Sy

The Energen Pilipinas recorded their 3rd straight win as they crashed the Malaysian Team in the 8th SEABA Championship U-18 game last Friday, June 29, 2012 in Singapore with a final score of 84-65.

La Salle Greenhills standout, Mario Bonleon led the national team in this ball game as he garnered 16 points and 4 rebounds. He was assisted by the former Mapua Red Robin star player and now an NU Bulldog, Rodolfo Alejandro III, who listed 13 points on the score sheet.

It was a close game in the first few quarters. Both teams executed tough defense to stop each other in making baskets. But, Malaysia got their rhythm as their two top scorers Lian Wei Loo and Kit Hoow Liew scored for the team resulting to Energen's 5 point deficit that pressured them to make baskets. Though Energen was able to equalize the score to 16 a-piece via Bonleon's 4 straight points.

Energen managed to get the lead before the 1st quarter ends. They tried to stretch it during the 2nd quarter. However, Malaysia stopped their run.

The Malaysians were able to have their own run and eventually tied the game to end the first half.

A sudden change happened in the 2nd half as Energen nailed an 11 point lead at the end of the 3rd that made the Malaysians struggle in the 4th. Energen kept their double-digit lead that secured their undefeated record in the team standings.

Energen Pilipinas was the defending champs of the league and they are showing their undeniable dominance. They've won 3 straight games. Hopefully they'll be able to go all the way just like what they did last time.

Energen Pilipinas routs Indonesia to sweep SEABA Under-18 tournament
    Mikkel Bolante, InterAKTV · Saturday, June 30, 2012 · 5:29 pm

The Energen Pilipinas national youth team defeated Indonesia, 81-57, to complete a sweep of its four games and defend its title in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association Under-18 Championships in Singapore.

The Philippines once again banked on a strong effort in the second half, turning a six-point halftime lead into a second half blowout.

Co-captain J-Jay Alejandro led Energen Pilipinas with 18 points, built around four three-pointers, while Rey Nambatac finished with an all-around line of 15 points, four assists and four steals. Kyle Suarez added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Philippines.

Indonesia was led by Jan Misael Panagan, who had 13 points and six rebounds in the game.

The boys of Energen coach Olsen Racela relied on excellent defense in the game, holding Indonesia down to a miserable 28% shooting clip from the field and forcing 18 turnovers, which resulted in 17 turnover points on the other end.

The Philippines clinched its third straight title in the SEABA Under-18 Championships, winning in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2008 and in Yangon, Myanmar two years ago.

Energen Pilipinas cruised to an easy sweep of tournament with double-digit wins in each of their four games. They scored an average of 91 points per game while holding opponents down to just 53.3 points.

The top three finishers in the tournament qualify for the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championships in Mongolia later this year. Both the Philippines and Indonesia have qualified while Malaysia and Singapore dispute the final spot in the last game of the tournament.

Great win! After their narrow victory over Singapore, I was starting to feel a little scared for out youth team but I think we can chalk it up to little practice and preparation time. Plus a lack of the other quality players who are playing for the UAAP. Still, this is a great build up for the upcoming FIBA-Asia tourney. They got ample playing time together and they're only going to get better and better. Go Team Pilipinas!
Credit goes to CKR13 for this! Thanks so much!

PHL U-18 five stifle Indonesia, clinch SEABA crown
    JOB B. DE LEON June 30, 2012 7:39pm

The Philippines’ Under-18 basketball team defeated Indonesia, 81-57, successfully defending their South East Asian Basketball Association Championship on Saturday at the Singapore Basketball Center.

National University recruit JJ Alejandro led the team with his four triples and a game-high 18 points. Letran Squire Rey Nambatac contributed 15 points, while University of the Philippines player Kyle Suarez had 13 points and nine rebounds.

The youth team outscored their opponents in the paint, 36-20, and had 20 assists to show for a quality team effort on offense. They also limited Indonesia to just eight points in the final period, punctuating a dominant run throughout the tournament.

Alejandro and Nambatac combined for three treys and scored all the Philippines’ points in an early 13-6 run. After a couple of trips to the line by Indonesia cut the lead to four, Hubert Cani scored four of the Philippines’ next 11 points to keep the Indons at bay, 22-15, at the end of the first.

In the second period, the Nationals missed a lot of easy shots down low and tallied only 13 points, their lowest quarter output in this campaign. Although Kevin Sitorus made the lone basket for Indonesia in the paint, they hung around by converting four charities with under three minutes in the half. Alejandro buffered the lead with another trey to maintain a slim 34-28 advantage.

The Nationals came alive again when play resumed after the break. Remy Morada and Nambatac combined for nine points in a 12-4 run, capped by a trey from the right wing by Suarez to open a 46-32 advantage. Suarez would make another trey and combine with UE’s RR De Leon to score seven of the Philippines’ next 15 points, bringing the tally to 61-49 after three quarters.

In the fourth, the Philippine team’s dominant defense came into play once more, as they cruised to victory in the game’s twilight period.

The sweep gives the Philippines a berth to the FIBA Asia Cup to be held in Ulan Bator, Mongola, this August. The Under-18 team defeated Laos, Singapore and Malaysia by an average of 37.8 points, a margin bolstered by a crushing 96-point win against the Laotians.

    fyi ......

FIBA U17WCM - Lithuania win thriller over Korea

KAUNAS (2012 FIBA U17 World Championship) – Twelve players scored in double-figures and there were 38 ties or lead changes as hosts Lithuania outlasted Korea in a game for the ages to regiser their first win at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship.

Gediminas Zalalis (27 points and 13 rebounds) and Edvinas Seskus (25 and 15) both collected double-doubles in Lithuania’s 119-108 overtime victory over Korea, who had Heo Hoon collect 37 points, 8 assists and 7 steals and An Young Jun added 30 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks.

“I’m happy that we managed to regain our confidence … Anyway, a win is a win,” said Lithuania coach Paulius Joudis, whose team improved to 1-1 after losing in their opener to Canada.

Zalalis provided the heroics for the hosts, hitting a lay-up with 3.0 seconds left in regulation to knot the game at 100-100 and then blocked his fifth shot of the game on Heo’s layup attempt at the buzzer. Zalalis then scored eight points in the overtime session – in which the Koreans went 0-for-6 from long range.

“We played the first four quarters really well but we missed too many shots. The most important thing is that I missed the layup (just before the buzzer). We will try our best to win the next game,” said Heo, whose team dropped to 0-2 in Group B.

But I think at the senior level something like this is unlikely to happen, since adult players are more organized and disciplined defensively - in normal basketball if you lose 15 rebounds it's already game over, almost impossible to keep it close at 30+ or 40+.

Also small Korean line-up is very quick so they steal lots of balls (they were stealing one ball after another not only against Lithuania, but at the start of game against Spain as well). Game quality wasn't very good, but it really was very entertaining. If I remember well, Korea had 6 points lead with less than 2 minutes to go in the 4th Q., but Lithuanians managed to come back and force the OT. Gediminas Žalalis scored scored with 3 seconds left, later on Korea's possession he blocked the last shot.

Defense wasn't perfect, of course, but Koreans' shooting was sick, that's why the most of the game Lithuania was trailing.

As Lithuania's coach P.Juodis said after the game: "The only difference between their yesterday's game against Spain and today's against us is that then they didn't make those 3-point shots which made today."

In few years time 2012, 2013 2014 we would question ourselves Philippines has experienced bridesmaid finishes time in time again from the youth teams and finally in the senior teams.. its not wanting to be the champs now, its just wanting tobe in the next level...

    8th SEABA U18 Championship Standings

    · Philippines 4-0

    · Indonesia 3-1

    · Malaysia 1-3

    · Laos 0-4

    Day 1 report

    Day 2 report

    Day 3 report

    Day 4 report

SINGAPORE (8th SEABA U18 Championship / 22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championship): Hosts Singapore scored a 75-56 (Box scores) win over Malaysia on Saturday, the concluding day of the 8th SEABA U18 Championship, thus ending a six-year break in their participation in the FIBA Asia U18 Championship even as Philippines retained their SEABA supremacy with a 81-57 (Box scores) triumph over Indonesia and finished the competition winning all their four games.

Indonesia and Philippines had already booked their place as SEABA representatives in the 22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championship to be played in Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia) from Aug 17-26, thus leaving the Singapore-Malaysia game as a virtual play off for the third spot.

Singapore, aware of the opportunity began the game rather cautiously and managed to remain only marginally ahead on the scoreboard at the end of the first half. Singapore opened up the game in the third with a 29-15 run and then held fort in the fourth to clinch the victory.

The last time Singapore took part in the FIBA Asia U18 Championship was at the 2006 edition at Urumqi (China). The ouster also marked only the third time that Malaysia will not be a part of the FIBA Asia U18 Championship – 2004 Bangalore and 1987 Manila being the earlier occasions.

    Delvin Goh’s double-double – 20 points and 10 rebounds studded Singapore’s celebrations.

Philippines played under no pressure with the qualification already achieved.

A 22-15 lead at the end of the first quarter put Rodericko Racela’s team well in control and they only grew in confidence as the game progressed.

J-Jay Alejandro’s 18 points was the highest for Philippines.

Teams qualified for 22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championship from various FIBA Asia subzones are:

East Asia: China, Ch. Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Mongolia. S. East: Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore. South: India. Central: Kazakhstan. Gulf: Bahrain, Saudi Arabia. West: Iran, Lebanon, Syria.
