Hopefully Petron win enough games.... 3 more to go to secure a playoff spot for the finals.

Despite Cone ejection, B-MEG rallies to pummel Petron

Instead of talking to the media, B-MEG coach Tim Cone ushered his coaching staff to do the post-game interview after the Llamados picked up their second straight win in the semifinals of the Governors’ Cup.

Despite Cone’s ejection in the second quarter, B-MEG rallied to defeat Petron, 104-93, Wednesday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

“These guys won the game for us. Now I can retire and allow this group to take over my place,” said Cone in a jest before leaving the room.

The Llamados were down by 19 points with 1:43 left in the second quarter when the American coach was called for his second technical foul, leading to his ejection. Jeffrey Cariaso, a neophyte assistant coach and a longtime Cone disciple as a player, called the shots for the Llamados.

But the 1995 Rookie of the Year said the whole staff, which also includes Richard del Rosario, Johnny Abarrientos, and Koy Banal, deserved credit.

“Everyone knows you’re dreaming of this opportunity (to coach a game) and all of us were communicating at the sidelines and that’s the reason why we’re all here,” said Cariaso.

Cone’s ejection sparked the Llamados, who scored six straight points to end the second quarter.

“We had a mini-run in the final minute of the second period. We didn’t change our game plan. Pero nadala namin sa second half yung momentum of that run,” said Banal.

Abarrientos said the team merely tried to keep the game close in the second half.

“I told them six stops lang yan, try natin kung kaya natin lumamang,” he said. “Marqus was a key for us. Hindi kasi siya napapagod.”

Blakely finished with 35 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter, when the Llamados outscored the Boosters, 37-19. He made one spectacular play after another, including a thunderous slam similar a monster tomahawk jam a la Julius Ervin, that gave B-MEG a 96-89 with 3:06 left in the game.

The B-MEG reinforcement, a strong candidate for the Best Import award, also had 11 rebounds, five steals and three blocks.

The Llamados improved their win-loss record to 8-3, keeping within striking distance of first place Rain or Shine. Defending champion Petron collapsed for the second straight game to drop to fifth place with just two games remaining. With the 4-of-5 incentive out of its reach, the Boosters need to hope that none of B-MEG, Ginebra, and Talk ‘N Text win more than eight games.

    The scores:

    B-MEG (104) – Blakely 35, Yap 20, Pingris 18, Simon 10, Villanueva 8, Reavis 4, De Ocampo 4, Urbiztondo 3, Barroca 2.

    Petron (93) – Cabagnot 22, Washington 15, Santos 14, Ildefonso 14, Faison 12, Lutz 6, Hontiveros 5, Yeo 2, Miranda 2, Pena 1.

    Quarters: 19-32, 44-57, 67-74, 104-93

Racela tweets frustration about Petron collapse, lack of heart

For the second straight game, the Petron Blaze Boosters collapsed after taking a big lead, putting the defending champions in danger of losing their crown.

In a series of tweets, Petron assistant coach Olsen Racela echoed the thoughts of Boosters fans frustrated about the performance of the team.

    Olsen Racela ‏@thebigOls
    Hay naku! PUSO!!!

    Olsen Racela ‏@thebigOls
Kung hanggang third quarter lang sana ang PBA, nag grand slam na siguro ang Petron!

Against B-MEG on Wednesday, the Boosters were leading by 19 points when Llamados coach Tim Cone was ejected from the game. That sparked a mini-rally for B-MEG, who cut the lead to 13 points at the half.

But Petron was still up 12 points early in the fourth quarter, before the Llamados unleashed a huge rally to win the game going away, 104-93.

It was the same story for the Boosters against Barangay Ginebra last Sunday. After controlling most of the game, the Gin Kings rallied back to win on a last-second floater by import Cedric Bozeman to steal the victory.

The back-to-back losses put Petron out of the running for the “win 4-of-5″ incentive in the semifinals, which guarantees a playoff for the second finals. To have a shot at making the championship round, the Boosters need to sweep their last two games while hoping that no one among B-MEG (8-3), Ginebra (7-4), and Talk ‘N Text (6-5) wins more than eight games.

Petron slim chance hinges on its sweeping its last 2 games & no more team other than RoS getting to a 9th win.

Toroman: ‘No offer to coach in PBA for now’
    Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Friday, July 13, 2012 · 2:21 pm

Amid speculation about his future with San Miguel Corporation, Rajko Toroman said he hasn’t been offered to take over the helm of one of the conglomerate’s basketball squads.

“As far as I’m concerned, I am consultant at San Miguel Corporation,” Toroman told InterAKTV in a telephone interview. “There’s no coaching offer for now.”

Toroman, a former coach of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national program, acts as a consultant for the Petron Blaze Boosters in the PBA and the San Miguel Beermen in the ASEAN Basketball League.

SMC executive Robert Non said in a text message that the company has not yet discussed the possibility about Toroman taking over head coaching chores for any of its teams. Apart from Petron and San Miguel, SMC also bankrolls B-MEG and Ginebra in the PBA.

Toroman serves as a bench consultant for Ato Agustin of Petron, which has been eliminated from contention in the ongoing Governors’ Cup. The Boosters won the title in last season’s edition of the tournament.

Ato Agustin ready for uncertain future, says Petron may have too much talent
    Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Friday, July 13, 2012 · 6:40 pm

With Petron’s failure to defend its Governors’ Cup crown, Boosters coach Ato Agustin is unfazed about his future with the squad.

“Ready naman tayo dyan,” Agustin told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview. “Even before pumasok ako sa Petron, nakahanda naman ako (for a) coaching change.

    “Wala naman akong kontrata.”

Agustin’s comments came amid speculation that team consultant Rajko Toroman may take over his spot. The Serbian coach, however, told InterAKTV that there’s no offer for him to coach the team.

Last year, Agustin led the team to the Governors’ Cup title despite a lineup riddled with injury. This season, with its top players back from injury, Petron played with a star-studded lineup, raising the expectations of fans.

But Agustin said having a stockpile of talent isn’t necessarily better for the squad.

“Sabi nila malakas yung team namin dahil maski sinong ipasok ko, hindi ako mahihirapan. Pero sa totoo lang, mahirap nga yung puro star players ang nasa team. Hindi lahat accepted yung roles nila,” he said.

“Dahil nga panay star players, yung iba kinukulang rin sa playing time, so hindi nila accepted yung role na ganun. Pati na rin sa plays, a lot of times nagkakanya-kanya, particularly sa fourth quarter kaya madalas doon kami nag-co-collapse.”

Agustin said he hopes management will address those matters, even though he may not be around to see it.

“For sure, nakikita naman nila yung mga pagkukulang, so nasa sa kanila na yan kung paano yung changes na kailangang gawin.”

Rajko "open" to take over SMC pro squad
    By Karlo Sacamos
    July 13, 2012, 06:16 pm

Former Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman is being eyed to coach one of the three San Miguel-owned teams in the pro league starting next season. Jerome Ascano

FORMER national team coach Rajko Toroman has expressed his willingness to call the shots for one of San Miguel Corporation’s three teams in the PBA.

“Maybe in the future, I’m open to talk about it,” the Petron coaching consultant said on Friday before the Boosters' game against Talk ‘N Text in the Governors’ Cup semifinals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“Everything depends on the management,” he was quick to add. "The most important thing right now is to finish the conference right."

Although no formal offer has been made, Toroman said he welcomes the possibility as a “challenge for me.”

On Thursday, SMC director of sports Noli Eala said naming the Serb as a coach of one of the company's three pro teams -- the two others are B-Meg and Ginebra -- is "something that we're seriously studying."

Toroman has coached numerous professional European squads in the past, but he said that coaching in the PBA is "more difficult."

Toroman, 57, currently has a two-year contract with the Boosters.

Asked which team he prefers to handle, Toroman had no immediate choice.

“All three teams are great teams.”

Toroman is best known as the coaching genius behind the success of the 2008 Iranian national team that made it to the Beijing Olympics.

His success there paved the way for him to become coach of the pioneering Smart Gilas team, leading the squad to a fourth-place finish in last year's Fiba-Asia championship.

When his contract was not renewed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, the Serb joined the San Miguel group as a coaching consultant for Petron as well as SMC's team in the Asean Basketball League.

Default Talk ‘N Text runs down Petron to keep finals hopes alive

With its 103-94 victory over Petron, Talk ‘N Text remained alive in its push for a finals slot for the sixth consecutive performance.

Jimmy Alapag came through with a gutsy performance, bucking fever to finish with 21 points, while import Paul Harris led the way with 31 points and nine rebounds in the Tropang Texters victory Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Talk ‘N Text won their second semis game against one loss, keeping the door open for the team to win four of five matches, which comes with a berth for a playoff for the second finals seat.

“We’re still alive and we’re still breathing, but it’s still a one-miss-you-die situation for us,” said Talk ‘N Text coach Chot Reyes. “We’re shortening our sights and we’re focusing on going up against the league leaders on Monday.”

The Tropang Texters will go up against first place Rain or Shine in their next outing.

“They’re fighting for a finals berth while we’re fighting to stay alive,” said Reyes.

Against the ousted defending champion Petron, Talk ‘N Text played with more tenacity, outrebounding the Boosters, 47-35.

Playing with a sense of urgency, the Tropang Texters dictated the tempo of the game early on and led 49-38 at the half.

The Tropang Texters also took away the game of Petron Blaze import Marcus Faison, who was held scoreless in the second and fourth periods.

    The scores:

    Talk ‘N Text (103) – Harris 31, Alapag 21, De Ocampo 19, Castro 10, fonacier 8, Williams 7, Aguilar 4, Peek 3, Reyes 0, Aban 0, Alvarez 0.

    Petron (94) – Lutz 23, Ildefonso 17, Faison 10, Santos 10, Washington 10, Cabagnot 9, Yeo 7, Lanete 4, Pena 4, Hontiveros 0.

    Quarters: 28-19; 49-38; 70-72; 103-94

I wonder who picks the import for Petron. Its surprising how a rich team like Petron can't find a decent import. Heck they can't even find someone better than Lutz. Faison is just a spot up shooter and can't create his own shot. Well unless they want to lose intentionally to increase their draft pick.

I really don't think Arwind and Jwash can coexist. Everytime I watch them, it looks like one guy trying to 1up the other. They need more hustle guys like a Pingris/Pennisi/Maierhofer kind of big men. And what happened to Duncil? is he injured?

Definitely we will have a new champion for the 2012 Governor's Cup as the 2011 Governor's Cup champions Petron Blaze Boosters are eliminated.

With regards to SMC Group ..... Noli Eala being the Sports Director of said group, he has a big say on personnel decisions including import selection.

It is difficult to find quality imports as this time after the NBA started its Summer Leagues. Most the quality imports dreams of making it to the NBA on the other hand the Olympics is also around the corner where some imports do play for their National Teams.

It also a fact that the PBA is no longer at par with the other Leagues around the world with regards to salaries given to imports.

I do not think Team Management was able to patch up the tension between JayWash and Arwind after Washington openly accused Santos of Game fixing during team building last year.

I think with Coach Ato already having a hard time balancing the playing time of his superstars, its more difficult to use Duncil.

Your 4th paragraph is something to look into. I do think that one of them is on the verge of being traded in the off season.

Default West helps Meralco survive Petron in Sunday thriller

Meralco survived an Alex Cabagnot-led uprising by Petron Blaze and held on for a pulsating 113-112 win to end its season on a high note in the PBA Governors’ Cup semifinals Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Mario West eluded three defenders in the closing seconds and hit a difficult shot that proved to be the game-winner for the Bolts.

“There were anxious moments as we couldn’t stop Cabagnot. Petron came out strong in the fourth and we needed one last shot from Mario to win it,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio.

The Bolts ended their campaign in back-to-back wins to grab fifth place in the season-ending conference. They finished the season with an overall 20-23 record, a big improvement from their 13-20 mark in their inaugural stint last yeat.

“Definitely this is a lot better from the previous one,” said Gregorio. “Talk about progress, we definitely made a lot of progress this season.”

West’s golden basket capped his 41-point explosion in 48 minutes of play.

It came after Cabagnot drilled a three-pointer to put the Boosters to a 112-111 lead with 5.7 seconds remaining.

Gregorio sued for a timeout and let West attack the shaded area. He was met by three Petron players but was able to elude their defense with a twisting drive.

Mark Cardona added 26 points for Meralco while Chris Ross had a near triple-double effort for the Bolts with 10 points, 10 boards and eight assists.

Cabagnot had a great all-around effort with 29 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists, but it all went down the drain as the Boosters’ record dropped to 6-8.

Petron finished the season with a 23-23 win-loss mark, its worst season performance in the last four years. Last year, the team had a 32-24 in coach Ato Agustin’s first year at the helm.

With this, can we possibly assume now that one of them will be sure be traded even they'll change the HC next season!

There were even reports of Yeo and Arwind going at it during one of Petron's practice sessions last week.
Arwind sure has lots of "pals" in that Petron lineup.

I guess, this was only a misunderstanding between two players who'd really like to win!
