    Cool Ildefonso-Adducul like Shaq-Laettner

The basketball careers of Danny Ildefonso and Rommel Adducul looks like a Philippine version of the Shaquille O'Neal and Christian Laettner. Consider these:

Rommel Adducul - best amateur player, most dominating big man in amateur basketball, mutiple titles, multiple MVP's . As a pro IN THE PBA (MBA was also a pro league and he was an MVP there), only a couple of championships in a long career albeit as a journeyman, role player. Only a few allstar game selections (Laettner only had one allstar appearance and never won an NBA titile).

Danny Ildefonso - 2nd best big man in amateur basketball (after Adducul, and was the main reliever of Adducul in the national team), no collegiate titles, no MVP award, no major championships won in the amateurs. In the pros, MVP awards, multiple titles, multiple allstar game selections. Very similar to Shaq's amateur and pro career.

    Eerily simlar, don't you think?

And aside from these two Philippine basketball stars, can you think of any two players who were considered contemporaries or even rivals during their era, whose careers were similar to NBA counterparts or even local ones in a different era?

Similarities of Vic Pablo-Johnny Abbarientos with Emeka Okafur-Ben Gordon

Vic Pablo (PF) - 1993 2nd overall pick
    Johnny Abarrientos (G) - 1993 3rd overall pick

Both played for FEU which was the UAAP men's basketball champion at the time
Top pick in the batch was Jun Limpot who became a dominant big man in the PBA

    Emeka Okafur (PF/C) - 2004 2nd overall pick
    Ben Gordon (G) - 2004 3rd overall pick

Both played for UConn which was the NCAA men's basketball champion at the time
Top pick in the batch was Dwight Howard who became a dominant big man in the NBA

Just an anecdote on Adducul (and I'm sharing this to validate from someone else who might know). I've heard from several Bedans that Adducul would have been a Red Lion if not for a wrong decision by a Security Guard.

Apparently, Adducul went to San Beda applying for a college degree/basketball scholarship but was shooed away by a Security Guard when Rommel went to San Beda garbed in not-so-urban attire, carrying under his arm his native woven suitcase. Not knowing where to go that day, he starts roaming the streets of Manila, where he is spotted by an SSC basketball coach...and the rest, as they say, is history.

Two things I've learned from my dog:
1.) Never bite the hand that feeds you
2.) Don't shit in your own backyard

I heared that story as well. I think Adducul even went as far as the gym and did not look "urbane enough" for San Beda so they told him to go to another school that was holding tryouts - SSC. Then he dominated San Beda during thr NCAA championships.

It sucks that Rommel Adducul was already in his late 20's when he played in the PBA. He was a very skilled big man in the MBA, but he could have been much better if he train under Coach Ron Jacobs.

You can also build a strong case for 4 time UAAP champion Chris Cantonjos, starting center for UST in their championship run, and of the dominant PBL team Stag.

How can the security guard just shoo away a 6'6 solidly built guy? Even if he ain't "presentable" enough, I'm sure Manong Guard will give him a benefit of a doubt by being that tall and think.

Waiting to see if Greg Slaughter-Junemar Fajardo can be compared to Abet Guidaben-Ramon Fernandez.

All big men who played for a Cebu University (Slaughter - UV (at least for some time), Fajardo - UC, Guidaben - San Jose-Recoletos, Fernandez - San Carlos).
