Congrats to Croatia, but Canada still has a good chance to qualify.
Now onto game 2, let's see whether Japan can pull an upset with their 185cm center Mamiya.

I said coach why we practice so much. He said God will bless us after all this hard work. How can I argue with that !

Yeah noticed her smiling at the end of the game.

Japan must have had 20 of their shots blocked already, and since women's players can't jump more than 5cm, this must be a world record or something. Still it's only a 3 pt game! Japan just playing their heart out.

Is H. Horakova Andrei Kirilenko's cousin or something, the resemblance is uncanny.

    The 4 Europeans qualified.
Now for the 5th spot, maybe Canada slightly favorite ?

Well, she's good in receiving photography (not taking the photography).
Here she is with a cherry in her mouth, and green panties hanging out of her jeans.

WOW, Europe with 6 of the 11 teams so far in the Olympics (Russia, Great Britain, Czech Republic, France, Croatia, Turkey).
Of course, Spain is good enough to be there, but dropped the ball in the last Euro tournament.
I do like how competitive this Olympic tournament will be.
USA, Australia, Russia, China, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Croatia, and Turkey, all have a fighting chance to get to at least the semifinal and have a chance to fight for a medal (gold, silver, or bronze).

Umm, China doesn't have a chance to medal, in fact getting into the quarterfinals will be considered a success. China did finish 4th at home 4 years ago, but only 4 of the 12 players from Beijing could play in London, and none of them completely healthy. The rest are new players, and like Korea, the general level is regressing.

I also don't see some of the European teams, e.g. Croatia, to medal either. However France looks very strong, I believe they won all of their warm-up and official games this summer by double digits.

As for the last spot from this tourney, I think Canada is the big favorite, but they could lose to Korea on a bad shooting day. As JGX had pointed out, half of their team played no official basketball last year at all, including ex-WNBA player Kim Smith, and that may have been the reason they could not pass Croatia today.

Don't sell Croatia short. They are my dark-horse team to make it all the way to the Semifinal round, and the Bronze Medal game (but not the Gold Medal game).
I also don't think China will medal, but they can get to the Quarterfinal.
I still think they're good enough to get that far potentially.
And from there, who knows, all it takes is one upset in that Quarterfinal to go to the Semifinal, and have a chance to earn a medal, even after losing the Semifinal.

    France does look strong.
Czech Republic has the capability to be real strong, but they are an inconsistent team (like Spain is).
I see Czech Republic being one of those teams that could get knocked out on a major upset in the Quarterfinal if they don't play their best game.

Turkey is one of the most improving teams in the world (by far) over the past 12-18 months.
    Korea and Japan are declining.

Great Britain has no chance in the Olympics, even on home hardwood.

The last Olympics had a lot of different teams in it than we'll see this time around (Belarus, Latvia, Spain, Mali, New Zealand, Korea), assuming Korea doesn't get in.
That's six nations. Half the field, and would be replaced by (France, Croatia, Turkey, Angola, Great Britain, Canada), assuming Canada makes it.

    I think it's a definite upgrade.
The new six teams in, are much stronger than the old six teams out from Beijing.

Any of today's quarterfinal losers could take the fifth spot...none of them are good enough offensively to be a big favorite. Argentina beat Canada 61-59 at the FIBA-Americas last year, while Korea beat Japan 66-59 at the FIBA-Asia.

FIBA announcers rooting for Japan today was amusing.

Korea is, Japan is definitely not. They beat Korea today by almost 30 points, actually they already led by 27 by half time, I was very surprised. France + Croatia couldn't even beat Korea by 27 points together.

Japan is investing a lot in women's bball, eg. this summer, their NT has played WNBA teams, Team USA, Slovakia 3X, and a bunch of Euro teams while Korea had only 1 scrimmage against some Japanese club before going to Turkey. So that's the difference. Japan also has a "B" team every year (they don't even have 1 for men's basketball) and sending them to Australia, USA to train. I even suspect they are taking money from the men's team to invest in the women's team. Their women are limited by height, so they won't be elite in the near future, but they have a chance to get better.

Japan vs Canada for the 5th Olympic spot.
Still surprised how low scoring team is Canada, imo risking a lot with Japan.

Didn't get to see the games today due to fallout from a slight problem in the DC area, sounds like I didn't miss much. Can't see either potential qualifier making a big impact in the Olympics.

Congratulations to Canada on qualifying on their National Day, although the win was non-impressive.

Japan seriously needs to spend the money to find/develop a center, Yuka Mamiya is a pretty good scorer, but she's shorter than Canada's small forwards. But that's easier said than done.
