I bet the import to watch this conference is Rashad McCants, a former lottery pick in the NBA.

There'd be lots of chucking from that team obviously.

Maybe the plan is to average like 150 points a game.

For a financially strapped team, Powerade's bringing quality, ex NBA imports.
How they mesh with the pinoy game is another matter.

Powerade has never been a cash-strapped team. In fact, with the way they've been unloading the contracts of their "expensive or soon to be expensive players" like Lassiter and Kramer (with Anthony, Casio, and David possibly/probably on their way out soon), I'd say they are either:

    1) making even more money (with cash considerations from trades), or
    2) at the very least, saving a ton of cash (with a cheaper payroll).

They might even be doing both (earning money, and saving dough at the same time). Definitely good times for the shareholders!

I'm sure that when they finally "retire" from PBA competitions by the end of the season, they would've amassed a small fortune from their on-going firesale (plus the sale of the franchise itself). A nice little bundle of cash for their "nest egg," so to speak.

Alaska seems to be doing the same thing. The JR Reyes-Gabby Espinas swap is a tell-tale sign. I expect Thoss, Tenorio, and Baguio to follow soon.

Kramer psyched to join Barako Bull

The PBA has approved a revised deal that makes Doug Kramer the newest member of the Barako Bull Energy.

The league confirmed that it has approved the trade that would have the Powerade Tigers sending the vastly-improved slotman to Barako Bull in exchange for backup power forward Jondan Salvador and a first round pick in the upcoming draft. The transaction is a revision on a deal that the PBA earlier vetoed, that had Kramer and Salvador exchanging places without any draft picks involved.

On Twitter, Kramer expressed excitement over his new team. “Looking forward to the next chapter, I’m now a Barako Bull!” he wrote.

But he also expressed gratefulness for being part of Powerade Tigers, with whom he spent two conferences.

“Powerade, although my shortest stint, has had the most impact in my career. Can’t thank enough my teammates, coaches, and management, for helping my career. The finals run I will never forget. And I’m so glad things ended on a happy and helpful note.”

Kramer was one of the key players responsible for the Tigers’ Cinderella run to the Philippine Cup finals, where he finished second to Petron Blaze superstar Arwind Santos in rebounding and led all players in double-doubles. His numbers went down in the Commissioner’s Cup, as he was displaced from his starting spot by Powerade import Dwayne Jones.

According to a highly-placed team source, the former Ateneo slotman was seeking a three-year contract extension, but Coca-Cola management was only offering members of the team a maximum of one year on each new deal.

The move to offer Kramer a mere one-year deal fans further speculation about Powerade’s future in the PBA. Despite assurances from management that the squad is staying in the league, observers wonder whether the team will stay true to its promise after the team’s moves to trade key players, including Kramer and Marcio Lassiter, who was sent to Petron Blaze last month.

    Three's a charm for PBA

Coming off a rousing second conference where the last two play dates brought in over 20,000 fans each to the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the PBA looks to end its 37th season with an even bigger bang as the Governors Cup opens with a twinbill at the Ynares Center in Antipolo today.

It’ll be a blitz conference with a 45-game elimination schedule and five out-of-town sorties – Barangay Ginebra vs Meralco in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, on June 2, Air 21 vs B-Meg in Digos, Davao del Sur, on June 9, Alaska vs Talk ‘N’ Text in Tubod, Lanao del Norte, on June 16, Rain Or Shine vs Petron in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, on June 23, and B-Meg vs Powerade in Legazpi City, Albay, on June 30.

    The Petron curse strikes again
By SYDRICK SALAZAR | Published: MAY 20, 2012

When I wrote an article a couple of weeks back, it was just from mere observation.

Now I fear for every player from every lopsided trade the Petron Blaze Boosters would unleash.

I don’t know if this was reported or if the SMC had any plans to break this but apparently, new acquisition Marcio Lassiter will be out from three to six weeks because of a fractured hand he sustained during Petron’s tune up game against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. The California Swagger missed Petron’s game against Lassiter’s former team Powerade Tigers. Petron won, 97 to 83 with Powerade seriously missing the services of Lassiter and getting almost nothing from Rabeh Al-Hussaini.

The other consolation for the Boosters is the return of Jay Washington. This is Washington’s first game back from an injury that sidelined him since the start of last year’s Governor’s Cup.

    So what now?

The Lassiter injury brought a lot of possibilities in the individual races.

    JV CASIO
After Chris Lutz’ injury and the inability of Rain or Shine to make a respectable conference finish that dashed all hopes of a Paul Lee Rookie of the Year bid, Lassiter is far ahead in the rankings and is certain of the Top Rookie plum. With the injury though, it leaves JV Casio an opening to claim the plum. Six weeks of Lassiter absence and a ton of fantastic ballgames should do the trick for the 2011 PBA Draft top pick. However, Powerade needs to make the semis to further establish this fact. Also that 5-point game should be his only single digit game in this conference.

    GARY DAVID
Sure, he’s Lassiter’s former teammate but he’s also Lassiter’s biggest rival in terms of individual outputs. Taking Powerade to the finals of the Philippine Cup has its perks but there is no question that it would be hard for Gary David to make another title run with Lassiter in Powerade. This is why Lassiter needs to come back early and his former team to falter big time in the standings to solidify his position.

However, if and when Lassiter returns earlier than expected, one man is doing damage for Petron… as well as his chances.

    ARWIND SANTOS
Every time Lassiter misses a game, Santos should have a double-double output. With a strong import in Eddie Basden, perhaps we can see The Spiderman suit up in the playoffs and beyond. By the time we reach the semis, Lassiter should have missed a lot of the Boosters’ games and it leaves Santos with more statistical points. The Governor’s Cup has been extremely friendly for Arwind Santos. Last year, it was in this conference that Santos went berserk and annexed a Best Player of the Conference Award for himself. Even if Alex Cabagnot does well in the conference (Cabagnot should battle Casio for the Mythical Second Team), he’ll still be below Arwind and now, it seems as if the same can be said on Lassiter.

But should we narrow it down with these personalities?

    JAYSON CASTRO AND JAMES YAP
With Mark Caguioa in sickbay, there are two players that can “curse” Arwind Santos’ MVP hopes. The Talk N Text Tropang Texters will never have their grand slam this year but Jayson Castro still has a shot to win the MVP trophy with two straight finals appearances and a lot of MVP-like moves for the MVP-owned squad. Meanwhile, James Yap just won the Commissioner’s Cup Best Player Award and that should help him garner a crack for the plum.

I could go on and on about the individual accolades but I’m reverting back to the topic at hand.

I don’t know what sick and twisted voodoo was cast on Petron but how unlucky are they! I mean Lutz and Dondon Hontiveros are still doubtful starters and now they have Lassiter languishing at the sidelines.

I know saying Petron has a curse is kind of stupid and is of mere coincidence but you have to wonder what the hell they did to piss fate off.

    Game over.

The highlighted part is incorrect. Caguioa won the BPC. What Yap won was Finals MVP.
