The Chiba Jets (BJ-League) have announced that they will be joining the new JBL Superleague that will tip off in the 2013-2014 Season. The new JBL league will feature the current eight JBL teams, two JBL2 teams: Daytrick Ibaraki and Hyogo Storks.

So far so good with the Oita HeatDevils. They signed the following players to get ready for the next season:

Taishiro Shimizu

While the following were re-signed:

Wendell White
Taj Finger
Naoto Takushi
Masahiro Ohara
Kohei Mitomo
Matt Lottich

They are looking strong this early. Hatano provides championship experience while Shimizu will provide additional points in the offense.

Basketball: JBA sanctions new 22-team league

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The Japan Basketball Association on Saturday announced the formation of a new men's league for the 2013 season.

Eight of the league's 12 first-division teams will come from the Japan Basketball League's first division. They will be joined by the bj League's Chiba franchise and three clubs from the JBL's second division: Hyogo, Ibaraki and Kumamoto. The second division will have 10 teams.

"This is the first step," said Mitsuru Maruo, who is in charge of the new league's planning section, suggesting other bj League teams might follow in Chiba's footsteps. "I believe we will admit more of them for the following season."

First-division teams will play 54 or more games a year and include their regional affiliation in their team names and operate independently based on income from home games.

"On one level, we hope to develop a stream of top-level players," said Chiba President Shinji Shimada.

"We will continue to be active in the community at a grass roots level and will not change our policy of delivering entertaining play and promotions. The new league offers numerous possibilities."

So basically there is still no union between the 2 leagues, rather it looks like a JBL attempt to drive BJ-league to extinction. Greed.

So true. The JBA backed JBL offered a new league merger to the BJ-League late in 2010. Several BJ-League officials raised eye-brows wherein the new league could not guarantee an efficient revenue model for all new teams.

This is more like the JBL trying to pry the best BJ-League teams so as to make the league die a natural death.

Yokohama B-Corsairs import and the 2012 BJ-League MVP Justin Burrell will play in the NBA Summer League for the Golden State Warriors.

Hitachi Sunrockerz announced that Joji Takeuchi was named team captain. Yuka Chikamori was named vice-captain.

Meanwhile, Levanga Hokkaido has announced that former Mayville State University head coach Scott Berry as the club's new head coach.

Osaka Evessa has named a Serbian as their new head coach: Zoran Kreckovic.

The BJ-League have announced that expansion teams from Aomori and Nara prefecture will join the league next season for 2013-2014.

All star point guard Cohey Aoki has signed with the expansion team, Tokyo Cinq Rêves. Aoki once played for the Tokyo Apache from 2005-2011.

Aoki reunites with former coach Motofumi Aoki, who is now the head coach of Tokyo.

The Sendai 89ers have acquired veteran guard Yasuaki Arai from the Saitama Broncos in exchange for cash.

Sendai acquired a capable shooting role player.

Levanga Hokkaido is all set for the next season with the team's core that managed to finish fifth, narrowly missing the playoffs, set to return.

What are the qualifications for non-Japanese players who are of Asian descent to play in the BJ-League. I know in the past that the BJ league has allowed non-Japanese Asian players to play and not count as a "foreigner". Is it still possible to play in Japan as a non-Japanese Asian?

BJ-League teams are allowed one Asian import and five non-Asian imports. If the Asian imports exceed one, then that additional Asian import will have to occupy any of the five slots for the non-Asian import.
