    - Varese-Sassari has been great to watch, best game of the season so far. It was exciting to watch Sassari bounce back from a double-digits deficit in the last quarter and even go ahead in the score with a 3-pointer by Vanuzzo. But eventually, with a couple of free throws Mike Green led Varese to another win, although Vanuzzo once again had the game-winning shot on the buzzer but missed it. Varese (8-0) stays perfect and I believe they may have secured the 1st place for the 1st phase of the season.

    - Watching Bootsy Thornton's performances I am wondering if Siena did the right thing in letting him go, considering Marcelus Kemp's case.

    - Reggio Emilia (5th in a row) and Brindisi (3rd in a row), the newly-promoted are hot.

    - With 31 pts, Jonathan Gibson (Brindisi) is this week's mvp and the league's top scorer so far (20.4 ppg).

    - Montegranaro suspended C Zach Andrews, who's expected to leave soon. They decided to extend Freimanis' contract for the remainder of the season, but they're also looking for an addition and Valerio Amoroso may return should he accept their offer.

    - Caserta decided to not sign Cantrell and another player, they may sign only one guy, hopefully a quality player. Avellino broke the deal with Brian Chase (the player already signed the contract) and is now searching for another PG. Looking at how Caserta and Avellino are doing on the market I just can say that they're just damaging themselves (Caserta can't sign a player, Avellino lost Marques Green, Hardy and still can't sign a PG, they were expected to be a playoff contender and they're at the bottom).

    - Venezia did it again. How can such a deep and talented team win difficult games and lose at home to smaller teams? Coach Andrea Mazzon is in jeopardy now.

    - Glad that finally Chrysikopoulos could show his skills, this young guy is very good but bad injuries have been plaguing him since he came to Italy.

I don't know. Biella finally won another game on the road and apparently they're better. Obviously Venezia is a lot better but as you could see you can't put your trust in them.
Brindisi could be a fair pick (3 wins in a row, no injuries), although Avellino (missing 2-3 key players) will do the best to break their losing streak.
Roma should have chances to win at Bologna, imo.

    - Huge road win for surprising Caserta (no Americans, financial problems), against another team involved in the relegation struggle. They have now an unexpected 4-5 record and are apparently close to add a player, that should be rookie PG Erving Walker (Veroli, LegaDue). Pesaro fired coach Giampiero Ticchi.
    - Avellino finally won again - terrific game by Linton Johnson, this week's mvp - and just made some significant roster changes, as they officially brought back veteran sharpshooter Taquan Dean (Aliaga) who's supposed to replace injured Chris Warren (he will be released soon). Also, Dwight Hardy's case is coming to an end at last and he will be allowed to play as a Cotonou player thanks to his Congolese passport. It will take 2-3 days for this to happen, so there's a concrete chance he will make his debut on Sunday.
They're expected to make one last addition in a couple weeks, it should be another comeback as PG Marques Green is expected to leave Cedevita and rejoin his former team.
    - Milano is slowly showing signs of improvements as they managed to win some games lately, although they found it hard to defeat Montegranaro which stayed close till the final minutes. Best game of the season for Keith Langford, this week's top scorer.
    - With new head coach Luigi Gresta and still missing their leading rebounder Kotti, Cremona played a very good game on the road and went very close to an unexpected win in Sassari but unfortunately they fell short. It is rumored they're looking for a new PG, as Aaron Johnson is struggling a lot. He may be headed to Veroli if Walker signs with Caserta.
    - One more big game, although it was a losing effort against unbeaten and top ranked Varese for Donell Taylor. For the 5th time in the last 6 games he scored more than 20 pts, the only time he didn't he still managed to score 17. He's at his peak now.
    - Siena keeps rolling despite injuries (Kemp, Eze) and all the chemistry problems they had in the past few weeks and they deservedly got a road win in Cantù, which on the other hand seems to be in a difficult moment. Besides missing starting PG Jerry Smith, they also lost Pietro Aradori, their leading scorer due to an injury and now their backcourt is in an emergency. They're still looking to make additions and various names have been made, Brad Wanamaker (Limoges) among them.
    - One more loss for highly disappointing Venezia. They were missing their two main scorers Clark and Diawara, both injured, but once again they had a very poor performance and Mazzon is in real danger now.

    Siena (7-2)-Avellino (3-6) 101-65
    - K.Kangur 22 pts + 4 rebs in 20 mins (2/2 2p, 4/6 3p, 6/6 ft), B.Brown 20 pts + 3 rebs + 8 asts (5/8 2p, 2/4 3p, 4/6 ft), M.Janning 18 pts + 1 reb + 1 stl + 2 asts (5/7 3p, 3/3 ft), T.Ress 14 pts + 3 rebs + 1 blk + 1 ast (3/5 2p, 2/4 3p, 2/2 ft) ; M.Shakur 15 pts + 6 rebs + 2 stls + 5 asts (4/10 2p, 0/2 3p, 7/8 ft), J.Richardson 14 pts + 2 rebs + 1 blk + 1 ast (3/7 2p, 1/2 3p, 5/6 ft), N.Ebi 10 pts + 5 rebs + 1 blk (5/8 2p, 0/1 3p)

    - Roma puts an end to Varese's winning streak and now there are no more unbeatens. With an almost perfect performance (10/10 2p but 3/8 from the free throw line), Gani Lawal is this week's MVP.
    - With Varese's first loss, Sassari and Siena are now back in the hunt. Sassari won on the road at Milano while Siena, which is red hot, completely thrashed Avellino at home.
    - Milano and Venezia's crisis seems to be endless. But I really do admire both clubs that are keeping their coaches, although some moves are expected (will Venezia release Zoroski and Williams?).
    - Fotsis went scoreless, I think he's playing bad on purpose and he may not be the only one there. Milano is going to play its most important game of the season vs Zalgiris in a terrible moment.
    - One more miracle by Caserta, that completes a comeback in the final seconds of the game with a terrific 3-pointer by Stefano Gentile and then beats Cantù in the O.T. Cantù still struggling with injuries (Aradori, Smith out) and now with their recent results too, they need to make at least an addition or things will go even worse.
    - Brindisi wins on the road with a crazy 3-pointer on the buzzer by Jonathan Gibson.
    - Career high for Luca Vitali (Cremona), will he finally put all things together?
    - Trey Johnson's 31 pts are this round's top individual performance, but it was a losing effort, Biella was missing injured Craig Brackins.
    - Siena and Mario Kasun officially parted ways. Good move for both sides, as he's clearly past his prime and just couldn't fit the team's play. I guess they're going to let Ortner play also in the domestic league, but considering they're also expected to release Marcelus Kemp, they may bring in another SG.
    - Cremona is interested in PG Dawan Robinson (last season in LegaDue with Reggio Emilia).

    - No upsets this week, although it's nice to see Roma keeping this consistency also on the road. Milano (Scariolo, lol) survived a scare with a thrilling win at Pesaro, thanks to a drive on the buzzer by Langford, but a W against bottom-ranked opponents can't really hide all the problems affecting that team. Finally Venezia won at home in one of the ugliest games of the season.
    - Bad luck haunting Bruno Cerella, who was supposed to be a key contributor (9.6 ppg last season with Teramo) from the bench for Varese. He was on his way to finally make his debut after recovering from an injury and he got hurt again, it seems he will be ruled out for 5-6 more weeks.
    - Reggio Emilia also dealing with injuries: they've lost starting C Greg Brunner (will be back in January) and Latvian youngster Ojars Silins. I expect them to make an addition.
    - Cantù finally agreed to terms with a new PG to replace injured Jerry Smith, it will be Derwin Kitchen (Panathinaikos), who will be officially announced soon. Unfortunately they will have to play against Fenerbahce without him, while Aradori should be able to play, even if hurt.
    - Venezia has lost PF/C Tommaso Fantoni for the remainder of the season. They will probably release disappointing C Eric Williams, who appeared to be in bad shape and sign a PF. Apparently they are not interested in Mancinelli, who's still a free agent, now they're trying to see if there are chances to bring Jumaine Jones back to Italy.
    - Although Aaron Johnson has been playing a little better lately, Cremona is still considering to release him and sign a new PG. The names are always the same: Morris Finley, Brian Chase, Dawan Robinson.
    - Pesaro is also expected to make some moves. Rookie PG Reggie Hamilton should leave soon (expected to play in LegaDue with Ferentino), they wanted to add veteran Serbian PG Ivan Zoroski but Venezia refused as they were asked to pay most of his (high) salary. Another name is JR Bremer (Fenerbahce) but it's an expensive option too.
    - Milano considering to get rid of disappointing Richard Hendrix and Antonis Fotsis. They may try to bring back Leon Radosevic from Lietuvos. They're interested in bringing back JR Bremer, too.
    - Siena expected to take a definitive decision on Marcelus Kemp, but it seems he will leave. After letting Ortner debut in Italy, it's unlikely they will sign Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

How is it possibly Mancinelli is still a free-agent? I know he never lived up to the potential bestowed upon him while he was young (I remember how highly Dino Meneghin praised him), but he’s still a member of the Italian NT. Is he asking for too much money?

I thought money was the main reason Mancinelli left Milano, so it could be.

boyd, we know your thoughts on Scariolo, but what roster changes do you think Milano should make? Other than signing the Diener brothers...

Fener fans really really don't like Bremer although he did pretty well for Milano last season. I think you said at the time you thought they should keep him.

Not only he's still a member of Italian NT, he's the captain.
Yes, he rejected Milano's offer which he considered too low, had a bunch of offers from Italy and other leagues, mainly Spanish ACB and Turkish TBL, but rejected them all.
He's wrecking his career and his future with the NT.

Milano has a terrible coach and a terrible management too, I'm afraid they won't go anywhere as far as they all stay.
They can be rich and wealthy and sign all the players they want but it's the whole club that simply doesn't work.
Players have no motivations (Fotsis, Hairston, Cook, Hendrix and others just seem they don't care at all and they don't stand their coach) and have a bad attitude on the court. I think they would need to change too many things to save this season, even only in the domestic league.

Bremer had a good stint there last season, when he joined the team they had good games and results and Cook played a lot better too.
They didn't trust his health and thought he was too old to be given the role he had last year, they signed Stipcevic but although he's a good player I think he just doesn't belong to Euroleague level, so they're now thinking about Bremer again.

It seems Panathinaikos (for now) has no intentions to let Kitchen sign with Cantù, although he already agreed to terms with the team.
It's quite unexpected since PAO has made some moves lately and Kitchen was rumored to be on his way out since several weeks.

Where do you think would be the right situation for Mancinelli?

Forgot to ask- one of the Zalgiris fans said Cook was talking back to Scariolo during one of the timeouts last week. Any idea what he said?

If I were him I'd spend the rest of the season in a small team to get consistent playing time and a major role.

Don't know exactly, but it often happened that Cook contested Scariolo's words during timeouts. Other players just don't even seem to hear him while he is talking to them.

The league had a bye week, because of the All-Star Game and several teams have been looking to making changes where needed.

    EA7 MILANO
One of the major disappointments of the season so far. Kicked out off the Euroleague in the first stage, they're struggling in the domestic league too, but they're just too blind or too stubborn to fire their coach and prefer to waste big money in any other way. They fired assistant coach Fabrizio Frates (lol), released their starting PG and captain Omar Cook (signed for Caja Laboral) and are looking to parting ways with Richard Hendrix, but it's not easy at all since he penned a 2-yr deal for 2 million dollars in the summer and obviously he doesn't want to give up his money and currently there's no team willing to pay him that much.
They brought back veteran PG JR Bremer, after his horrible stint in Turkey, but he's supposed to play as a backup since they are pushing hard to sign Polish league's standout Walter Hodge. It seemed the deal was done, the team had accepted Milano's offer (Hodge extended his contract with Zastal last summer with a 2-yr deal for 400 k/dollars per season) - that apparently was very convincing - and the player himself had already packed his bags and said goodbye to his teammates, but at the very last moment Zastal's chairman changed his mind and declined the offer, claiming they were not going to let Hodge go.
For now the deal is stuck at a dead end and as a consequence Rok Stipcevic will not be allowed to leave and move to Pesaro on loan for the rest of the season.

    MPS SIENA
Hard to make additions when you're forced to heavily cut your finances. They broke Kasun's contract and they did the same with Marcelus Kemp only a few days ago. Minucci said they're considering to re-sign Kemp for a lower wage and added they don't have big money to make significant moves, so he prefers to put his trust on the roster as it is, despite it is quite short and they clearly lack quality in their frontcourt where they've been struggling big time since the beginning of the season.

    MAPOORO CANTU'
It's been awhile since they've lost starting PG Jerry Smith due to a serious injury. They've been negotiating with an endless list of candidates but never managed to sign anyone. Meanwhile they played shorthanded squeezing everything out of Tabu and considering the other injuries (Aradori, Scekic, Tyus) they had to play key games with a very limited roster and this partly explains why they're out off the Euroleague. I really didn't like they way they handled this situation, probably it was a money issue, but I have the feeling they could have easily advanced to Top 16 if only they made some additions, at least in the PG spot. Anyway, they lost Derwin Kitchen (they already agreed to terms with him, but they did not agree with PAO), who will spend the rest of the season on loan at Cedevita, and they're now eyeing other players, Kevin Anderson (last season at Strasbourg, France), among them.

    UMANA VENEZIA
They lost PF Tommaso Fantoni (injury) for the remainder of the season and just signed veteran Czech PF Jiri Hubalek, who has been playing in Lebanon and Iran lately, but spent most of his professional career in Italy, playing in Serie A and in LegaDue. They will likely release an import, it will be either C Eric Williams (hurt and in poor shape) or PG Ivan Zoroski (very disappointing).

    PESARO
They're alone at the bottom and struggling with financial issues since the beginning of the season. They're paying their players, but their finances are very low and forced them to bet a lot on young and cheap players. They also had bad luck, since they immediately lost young rising star PG Andrea Traini (will miss the rest of the season) and PF Valerio Amoroso left a few weeks later. They recently released rookie PG Reggie Hamilton (signed for LegaDue side Ferentino) and surprisingly added former Fenerbahce and Efes Pilsen SF Tarence Kinsey. They're looking for a PG and were very close to bring in Rok Stipcevic on loan from Milano, but the Hodge affaire have messed it all. Apparently they're now close to ink Torey Thomas.

    SIDIGAS AVELLINO
They were considered as potential "sleepers", but they had a very slow start which led them to fire their coach and make some roster changes. Finally and after more than 2 months, they've been able to sign Dwight Hardy as a Cotonou player, they also brought back Taquan Dean from Turkey. They're about to release PF/C Ndudi Ebi, who's underperforming and showing a very bad attitude after a promising start, they just replaced him with Bulgarian PF Kaloyan Ivanov.

Next week will tell us what teams will be competing in the Italian Cup, currently 6 teams already clinched a berth for that trophy (Varese, Sassari, Siena, Cantù, Roma, Brindisi), there are still two spots available and one team will be the winner of Reggio Emilia-Caserta game and the other one should be Milano, although Venezia still has small chances to qualify.

    - Varese keeps winning but hard times are coming, as besides Bruno Cerella they've lost Ebi Ere (16.2 ppg) and Adrian Banks (16 ppg), so they all are expected to miss 3-4 games.
    - Donell Taylor (Reggio Emilia) is this week's top scorer and mvp.
    - Venezia's backup PG Ivan Zoroski got hurt and will be out for at least 1 month. They've signed Puertorican combo Denis Clemente, soon after being released from Pesaro.
    - Avellino is interested in former Italian NT PG Anthony Maestranzi.
    - Biella just signed USA/Montenegrin PG Taylor Rochestie (released by Caja Laboral). They're now looking to adding a PF to replace Craig Brackins (released due to a hand injury), one or two players should leave (Jaramaz and Chrysikopoulos as the main candidates).
    - After adding Marques Green as their new starting PG, Milano agreed to terms with Pops Mensah-Bonsu, but he needs to pass medical tests in order to be signed and replace Richard Hendrix.
    - Cremona lost Luca Vitali, who got injured and will be sidelined for about 1 month. They're not expected to make any move although Jarrius Jackson claimed to be close to get an Italian passport which would allow them to even add 1 more American player.

Venezia is a good team but they also are battling with injuries (Keydren Clark just came back after an injury and apparently he's still hurt, Zoroski is out and Fantoni is done for the season) and have a couple of players (Hubalek, Clemente) to put into their system. They're very unpredictable, they won against Siena and Milano and finally managed to build a winning streak but unexpectedly they just lost at home to Avellino and this should kick them out of Italian Cup. In order to qualify they need to win at Varese (they miss three players, two of them - Ere and Banks - are key contributors) that is still unbeaten at home and Milano must lose at Brindisi (they will miss 6th man Klaudio Ndoja, which is a tough loss to them). In my opinion Varese remains the favourite but Venezia can beat them, just don't trust them too much, as you've seen they're very inconsistent.

Right, but usually Venezia play better matches with better opponents so I try +9.5hcp on Venezia

And what do you think about Avellino(-4.5)?

First part of the regular season came to an end.
First home loss for top-ranked Varese, still battling with injuries (Banks, Ere, Cerella all out), amazing blowout for Siena, completely thrashed at Sassari in the game between 2nd ranked teams. Milano was about to wreck one more game, after blowing away a 17-pt lead, but in the end managed to win and clinched a berth for the Italian Cup.

    The games will be:
    (1) Varese - (8) Milano
    (2) Sassari - (7) Brindisi
    (3) Siena - (6) Reggio Emilia
    (4) Cantù - (5) Roma

Not great news for Varese, to be at the top and get Milano (they will host Italian Cup) as their opponents, also it's the first time ever that both the newly promoted teams (Reggio Emilia, Brindisi) manage to qualify for this trophy.

Milano officially brought back PF Leon Radosevic, who was on loan at Lietuvos Rytas.

Jarrius Jackson officially got an Italian passport and Cremona just signed American PG Brian Chase.

Biella parted ways with Serbian shooter Nemanja Jaramaz, should also release Linos Chrysikopoulos and Russell Robinson, they added veteran guard Dimitrios Tsaldaris and are expected to sign a PF.

Interesting, they're a good team, it's surprising they're struggling so bad, definitely they're better than Montegranaro.
Avellino just fired their coach and hired Cesare Pancotto, I expect him to give the team a boost so I'd go with Avellino.
