Sadly, our sports is mostly about money and 90% of players choose the teams with the amount of money paid to them being the main and sometimes the only factor. We all saw it this summer with Pao - club with a huge tradition, passionate fans and so on with its players who often choose to pose like 'my heart belongs to the Greens forever' and still when it has cut its salaries almost all of its key players (Greeks included) chose to ran from the Athens team. And it's not that they would play for food in Pao, nope, but other teams could provide them with 20%-30% better contracts and they are leaving Pao without hesitation.

Aside from money Ukraine can provide players with a good, competitive league which progressed substantially last pair of years and that's what counts the most in the eye of the real professional basketball player. Ukraine is a rather poor country overall with definite problems in infrastructure but it's not some shithole where gangs rule the streets, babies die from malnutrition and bears are dancing in the cities squares drinking gorilka and eating salo.

About Archibald comments: well, such a close-minded person, it's nothing more than a collection of stupid stereotypes which he thoroughly believes. The last statement about the only way for his wife to cure her appendix was the trip to US as no surgeons in Ukraine can cope with that is hilarious. God, it's an appendix problem, not some open heart surgery. I bet that even in Niger or Ruanda you can find an adequate treatment for your appendix problems.

BTW, when I was in Prague on vacation I have a stern food-poisoning and the level of the health-care provided was very low (yet I can't say this about amount of money paid for that) but I won't jump into conclusions and insist that Czech Republic is a backwards country with crude level of medicine and overall well-being.

Hell, I'm definitely not an Ukrainophile, far from that, but to read such a massive amount of bullshit is annoying.
OK, but tell me other reason than money why good players go to Ukraine???

I heard the Ukrainian bears had been forced to sober up.

I think it is good that you have given us a more balanced picture of Ukraine but it is also possible that players other than Archibald will have viewed playing there negatively and maybe some stigma builds up around it. Anyway, only Perkins and his agent will know what offers were on the table and ultimately they decided Donetsk was the best proposal.

Also, anyone know why Donetsk don't play in VTB? They surely have the level to participate in it.

They for sure have the level to comepete there. But Donetsk last season played 53 games in the Ukrainian league (39 regular season + 14 playoff) and 14 games in the Eurocup. Don't you think, that this is enough travelling?

The outcome of the last season proved, that Donetsk was right in saving some power for the Ukrainian finals. Azovmash (which played Ukrainian League, Eurocup plus VTB League) lost vs. Donetsk 0-4.

Most teams in the VTB League next season will play only in two competitions. The Russian league doesn't exist any more, Zalgiris and Lietuvos rytas in Lithuania play a reduced schedule (no home games). With the European rosters you cannot play more than 70 games without wearing down your team.

I think we should close the theme. One story until last, PJ Tucker´s experience...

"Tucker's European journeys enriched him and his bank account. His Ukrainian owner walked into a pregame locker room with a bag of cash and told the players they would get $10,000 each if they won. They rolled."

    Nice

Ok, thanks for explaining. That is a lot of games. I thought perhaps Ukrainian teams could played a reduced schedule to allow them to play in VTB too.
