there was a power struggle within the Delos Santos Family regarding the control of the school. They're fighting about money. The family members who toppled the old management also dismantled UM's basketball program and would not honor the scholarships given to the players. However former UM President Dr. Ernesto Delos Santos and his part of the family is now trying to wrest back again the authority to manage the school. So at this time their basketball program is on hold.

Oooh. UM has seemed to be on the decline since it left the UAAP a log time ago. Sayang, malakas pa naman ang basketball prgram nila. Look how Jeff Viernes and Eugene Torres changed schools faster than you can say sayang naman! Kawawa naman ang mga players.

Huh???? UM was dropped from the UAAP way back in 1954.

its more identified with the Manila Universities and Colleges Athletic Association (MUCAA) then Cultural and Athletic Association of Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (CAACUP) that later became the National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) but the Hawks transferred more recently to the NAASCU. The University of Manila Hawks won the first 5 NAASCU titles (2001-2005). They strung up a 76-game win streak broken only a couple years back by the St Clare Saints on a last-second shot from midcourt.

UM is also consistently the best school team in the Inter-Collegiate Tournaments which is not part of the UAAP, NCAA and the predecessor of the CESAFI and actually winning it in 1993.

University of Manila also won the 52nd National Students Basketball Championship in 1999.

Among the more prominent players UM produced were Nelson Asaytono, Jecjeck Pelaez, Jun Limpot, Chris "Jumbo" Bolado, Oscar "Biboy" Simon, Paul Alvarez, Joel Dualan, Eugene Tan, Leo Avenido, Reynel Hugnatan, Ronnie Matias, etc

The team's decline really started when they were forced to let go their long time Head Coach Ato Tolentino after negative publicity caused by this video taken in NAASCU's 7th season and after investigations made that it confirmed this is how he normally deals with his players:

my bad Sir. though UM left the UAAP in 1954, and it was quite downhill from then hehehe.

about the video: Not even a Joe Lipa or a Yeng Guiao would do that.
