Asi Taulava sets charity game for flood relief
    InterAKTV · Wednesday, August 8, 2012 · 5:23 pm

Star center Asi Taulava, who spent the past two seasons with the Meralco Bolts, is organizing a charity basketball game, with proceeds going to relief operations for those affected by floods brought about by the torrential rains that have hammered the Philippines this week.

The game, which is set on August 26, will feature PBA players as well as showbiz celebrities. Doug Kramer of Barako Bull, Renren Ritualo of Air 21, Beau Belga of Rain or Shine, Billy Mamaril of Barangay Ginebra, and Mac Cardona and Sol Mercado of Meralco have already confirmed participation with other celebrities expected to be announced soon.

People can donate in cash and in kind during the event, which is organized with the help of James and Griffin Multimedia and Atleta.

Those who want to volunteer may email asitaulavatherockcharitygame@yahoo.com. For updates, follow the organizers @femaleagentsr , @mrslava_lava , and @asitaulava5 on Twitter.

Earlier on Wednesday, the PBA announced that it was donating P1 million for flood relief efforts. This was in addition to efforts by players, spearheaded by SMART-Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes, to collect P1 million among themselves for flood donation, an amount that will be matched by the MVP Sports Foundation.

Pro league OKs charity game for flood victims

By Nelson Beltran (The Philippine Star) Updated August 11, 2012 12:00 AM

MACAU – Ahead of their planning session here, PBA officials gave their approval on the charity game being initiated by Meralco veteran player Asi Taulava to go with the earlier assistance extended by the pro league on relief efforts for flood victims back home.

PBA commissioner Chito Salud and the league board have encouraged the players to initiate moves to help the calamity victims while they chart the league’s courses of action for next season this weekend here.

“It’s nice for them to take the lead. It’s nice for them to show they espouse the bayanihan spirit, especially the Fil-Am players who many thought are distant and unaffected,” said Salud.

Taulava is spearheading the staging of the Asi “The Rock” Taulava Charity Game on Aug. 26 at the Ynares Arena in Pasig with proceeds going to the calamity victims.

The PBA and the MVP Sports Foundation have earlier donated P1 million each for the same cause.

The pro league has also extended help on Taulava’s undertaking, getting the nod of Rizal Gov. Junjun Ynares for the free use of the Ynares Arena for this particular charity game that will feature PBA players and showbiz personalities.

The idea is to form two teams with 10 PBA players and five celebrities each.

Dondon Hontiveros, Arwind Santos, Macmac Cardona and Renren Ritualo are among those who have confirmed participation with a host of others also volunteering to play.

“They’re working on details and they’re choosing their beneficiaries,” said Salud.

“Am I surprised? No, because I know these players are responsible. They have good hearts,” Salud said.

Salud, outgoing board chairman Mamerto Mondragon of Rain or Shine and incoming chairman Robert Non of Barangay Ginebra, led the PBA delegation that flew in here yesterday for their annual planning session.

“The goal is to ride the momentum of our banner seasons in the last two years. We have to continue. We have to push. We must stay the course,” said Salud.

First on their agenda last night was the formal election of new officers.

Non was to assume the chairmanship with Meralco’s Mon Segismundo set to be the vice chairman and Petron’s Ely Capacio as treasurer.

NOTES: Talks on the sidelines of the PBA planning session here are the coming rookie draft. With 6-foot-9 Cebuano behemoth Junmar Fajardo as the consensus top pick by Petron, Alaska assistant coach and assistant team manager Dickie Bachmann said they prefer either Fil-Am Cliff Hodge or San Sebastian star Calvin Abueva as the second choice. Mondragon said Rain or Shine is looking at the best available big man. If there’s no longer available good frontcourt player in their turn at seventh, Mondragon said they might trade their draft rights. Coach Yeng Guiao has earlier expressed his intent to keep his team intact.
