Default Sultan Kösen (2.46m, 8-foot-1): Tallest Man in the World

I heard about him a couple of years ago, what happened to him? Is he still trying to play basketball or has he given up? Did or does he actually have the potential?

Yeah I did sariss, thanks anyway Perhaps he just gave up playing basketball, from what I can remember he had never played the game and with that height perhaps his mobility was indeed not the best one.

Sultan Kosen is world's tallest man at 8ft 1in

Sultan Kosen has been officially recognised as the world's tallest man by Guinness World Records, after measuring in at 8ft 1in.

The 26-year-old, from Turkey, also has the largest hands, with a 10.8in (27.5cm) span, and longest feet at 14.3in (36.5cm).

Mr Kosen, who has three brothers and a sister, applied for consideration as the tallest man in Turkey and was discovered to be more than 10cms taller than the world record holder.

The title was previously held by Bao Xishun who was first recognised by Guinness in 2005.

Mr Kosen arrived in London on Wednesday for an official unveiling, and said he hoped the fame would help him find love for the first time.

He said his size had put women off and he had never even had a girlfriend.

''The first thing I want to do is have a car that I can fit in but more than that I want to get married.

''Up until now it's been really difficult to find a girlfriend. I've never had one, they were usually scared of me. I'm hoping now I will find one.''

He went on: ''It was really difficult for me to find a girlfriend before but hopefully now that I'm famous I'll be able to meet lots of girls.''

One the difficulties of being so tall is getting clothes which fit – Mr Kosen wore a specially-made suit to meet journalists which was one of the first outfits he has owned that is the right size.

He has also had to have a three-metre long bed made.

Mr Kosen said: ''The most difficult things are, for example, that I can't fit into a normal car. When I get into a car, it's a really tight fit. I can't go shopping like normal people, I have to have things made specially and sometimes they aren't always as fashionable. The other thing is that ceilings are low and I have to bend down through doorways.''

But his towering height does have its upsides.

He said: ''The good thing about being so tall is that I can see people from a long distance. The other thing is at home they use my height to change the light bulbs and hang the curtains, things like that.''

A smiling Mr Kosen, who used crutches to stand, said he had always dreamed of coming to London and had two seats to himself on the flight over.

Medical problems ruled out a career in basketball, and he now works occasionally as a farmer.

Mr Kosen is the first person in more than a decade to be more than 8ft in height, a spokesman for Guinness World Records (GWR) said.

The gentle giant grew normally until he was ten but then a tumour caused him to develop a medical condition called pituitary gigantism.

The tumour was removed last year and his growth stopped.

His visit to the UK is the first time he has travelled outside Turkey, and he will go on to visit the US and Germany.

GWR editor-in-chief Craig Glenday said: "We only know of 10 confirmed or reliable cases in history of humans reaching 8ft or more.

"Sultan's an imposing figure, but a gentle, quiet man who's totally relaxed and unfazed about his unique standing in the world.

"It's a pleasure to welcome him into the Guinness World Records family and celebrate his mark as one of the most important record holders of this decade."

Mr Kosen's record was unveiled to mark the launch of Guinness World Records' 2010 edition.

Default 8-foot-1 Sultan Kosen: Tallest Man in the World

    http://www.huliq.com/8059/86664/worl...-world-records

Kosen in Guinness Book of World Records
Sultan Kosen is 27 years old and now officially in the Guinness Book of World Records as the World's Tallest Man. Kosen, from Turkey, stands a towering 8'1" tall and also has hands that would rival a giant. He is proud of his award and gleamed with pride in hopes for a better life when presented with the award on the Today show this morning.

Guinness Book of World Records editor Craig Glenday presented a plaque to Kosen honoring him as the “World’s Tallest Man”. He is the tallest man Guinness has been able to document in 20 years.

Kosen stood tall among the tallest of buildings in Rockefeller Center in Manhattan this morning. It was his first stop since leaving his town of 320 people in eastern Turkey as part of a Guinness promotional tour. Sultan Kosen will be visiting Los Angeles, Austria, Portugal, Spain and Italy before heading back to his home country. He has become a national hero in his country.

Hopefully the Guinness award will help Kosen move out of a past full of difficult times. He was diagnosed with pituitary gigantism at age 10 after doctors discovered a tumor behind his eyes; the tumor had put excess pressure on his pituitary gland and caused his extreme growth. A series of surgeries to stop his growth were finally successful last year.

“Up until now, I’ve really had a difficult life,” Kosen told Lauer and Vieira through Garrett. “But I’m happy. From now, I’m really going to have it a lot easier.”

Kosen is one of only 10 confirmed or reliably reported cases in which humans have grown past the eight foot (2.44 meter) mark, according to Guinness.

What is on Sultan Kosen's agenda as the Tallest Man in the World? Love. Kosen wants to find a girlfriend.

Yet for the big man with the big heart, finding love has been the tallest order.

"To this day, I haven't had a girlfriend because, with my height, they're generally frightened," he said. "But eventually that's one thing I really want to have - and she doesn't have to be as tall as me."

With his positive spirit, soft-spoken demeanor and just the fact that Sultan Kosen has made it through some rough medical hurdles, it seems only natural that love won't be far off in his future.

Kosen will probably never play hoops. Seems they saved his life with the treatment.

He'll never play basketball. I saw him and he can barely move and walk without aid. Besides, he has an impressive spinal curvature.

So, he's still growing? I thought he had already undergone surgery to stop his growth... It really can endanger his life. Maybe it's not safe to perform surgery on him?
