Siroki: Mirza Delibasic Cup ilo BiH Cup - Feb 19, 2012 (by Sead Buljina)

There is a great initiative coming from the Siroki Brijeg regarding BiH Cup's name. Namely, B.C. Siroki will suggest to the Bosnian basketball federation that the 'BiH Cup' from the next season be named after the best Bosnian player in its history, late Mirza Delibasic.
'The national Cup in Croatia is called 'Kresimir Cosic Cup', in Serbia 'Radivoj Korac Cup'. We have thought about it and will suggest to Bosnian basketball federation to change the Cup competition name to the Mirza Delibasic Cup, instead of BiH Cup,' said Ante Suton, the president of B.C. Siroki.

Our new National Team head coach, Aleksandar Petrovic, has gotten Goran Suton to play for Bosnia. It is very good considering Suton was completely ready to play for Croatia after our former coach, Sabit Hadzic, didn't contact him about playing. Petrovic has already began doing a great job for the NT, and I expect more of the same to come. Great job Aleksandar!!!

With our most recent squad (basically the one that played at Eurobasket 2011), here is what I would play for our starting lineup:

    PG - Domercant
    SG - Dedovic
    SF - Hodzic
    PF - Teletovic
    C -Sinanovic

We would have some nice bench depth (Kenan Bajramovic, Sasa Vasiljevic, etc.) and we would have our star in Teletovic and a rising star in Dedovic. Plus, other solid starters and we would actually have a starting-caliber big man (you really, really need them to succeed in European tournaments)... I think we could do wonders at Eurobasket 2013 but we still have to get through our (relatively easy) qualifying group containing Georgia, Latvia, and others. We begin qualifying this summer, by the way.

Cedevita signed Jusuf Nurkic. Aco contacted him and he should play for BiH, not Slovenia

He is a center, correct? f so, we will have some nice depth at the position for the upcoming qualifiers. And I am liking Aleksandar's efforts so far, getting these players.

Mirza Teletovic has been rumored to leave Caja Laboral and Spain to go play in the world's best league, the NBA. This is pretty exciting news and hopefully this rumor becomes a reality and Mirza pans out well in the NBA. I just wish Mirza was a few years younger, as he is already 27. Nonetheless, I hope he can come and play in the NBA, maybe even for the Sacramento Kings.

No none in particular but since he has never entered the draft, that is where he would probably go to join an NBA team.

The final standiings of this year's Bosnia Basketball League look like this:

    1) IGOKEA - 46
    2) BOSNA - 42
    3) CAPLJINA - 41
    4) VARDA HE - 39
    5) MLADOST - 38
    6) LEOTAR - 38
    .....
    10) ZRINJSKI - 32
    11) VOGOSCA - 32
    12) BROTNJO - 31
    13) CELIK - 29

Now, the top seven of the league this year will join Siroki Brijeg (Adriatic League representative) in "League 8" where the best four teams reach the play-offs. Then, the Bosnian champion is crowned. Whichever teams who do not make it to "League 8" go to the relegation group and try to avoid being relegated. Hoping Bosna wins this year and joins the Adriatic League for next year...

Siroki Brijeg took the 2011-12 BiH Kup home as the victors. They defeated Igokea 83:75 in the final.

As for League 6 (a second stage/league composed of the top five regular season teams and our Adriatic/Regional League representative which is Siroki Brijeg this year), here is the table, at the moment -

    1) Igokea - 2:0
    2) Siroki Brijeg - 2:0
    3) Mladost - 1:1
    4) Varda HE - 1:1
    5) Capljina - 0:2
    6) KK Bosna - 0:2

My team (KK Bosna) isn't looking too good. We have lost our first two matches, obviously, so we need to win our next one. We play KK Capljina today, and we have a better chance of winning than we have had this season so far (in League 6 at least). Battle of the bottom-feeders, today. Then again, this is the league of the best teams so you can't call them bottom-feeders.

    Teletovic, The Big Shooter
    By Jeff Taylor

Mirza Teletovic was named the Revelation of the Season in Spain's top flight with (Tau) Baskonia back in 2008.

The 2.06m Bosnian forward did so many things well for a player of his size, like bury one three-ball after another, that jaws dropped.

He was a mixture of power, finesse and clutch play.

In the years since, Teletovic has had some injury problems but nothing has lessened his impact on the floor for (now Caja Laboral) Baskonia.

That has been especially evident this season, one that is shaping up to be his best.

The native of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is pouring in 16.9 points per game.

He continues to hurt teams from behind the arc, shooting 36% (57 of 158) while inside the three-point line, Teletovic is burying 52% (123 of 235) of his shots.

In 14 of Baskonia's 28 games, he has scored 19 points or more.

Teletovic is crashing the boards and pulling down an average of 7.6 rebounds.

The performances have, not surprisingly, fueled speculation that Teletovic could follow in the footsteps of former Baskonia teammates Luis Scola and Tiago Splitter and play in the NBA next season.

"Now, I'm not thinking about that," he said.

"We're only focused on winning games here."

Baskonia, with 20 victories in the Liga Endesa, have all but secured third spot in the regular season and are only one win behind Real Madrid after defeating the Spanish capital giants on Monday night.

    THE TEAM ETHOS

In the Basque country, Teletovic has had the opportunity to play for a couple of very good coaches.

He won a title in 2008 under Neven Spahija and in 2010, Teletovic was in the Dusko Ivanovic-coached side that swept Barcelona in the ACB Finals just weeks after the Catalans' Euroleague title triumph in Paris.

Baskonia have had some changes in personnel and they didn't win this year's Copa del Rey or challenge for a European title.

But the philosophy that has remained the same under Ivanovic will give the team, many think, a chance to capture another league crown.

Ivanovic demands that players practice hard, understand their roles in the team and execute.

"We're trying to play as a team because it's the only chance we have to win," Teletovic said to Basketball World News.

"We have only one title left and it's the league, so we're going to try and do our best to win it.

"It's going to be very difficult because there are some very good teams, but we're going to do our best."

    PLAYING FOR A GREAT

It's hard to imagine Teletovic having a better teacher than Ivanovic.

"I learn a lot from him," he said.

"Dusko Ivanovic knows a lot about basketball because he was a player first and then has been a coach for many years.

"The most important thing is to learn from him. He's a great coach."

He also has the shining example of Pablo Prigioni, who at 34 remains one of the top point guards in Europe and is truly a coach on the floor.

"Pablo is a very experienced player and he brings something extra, something on defense," Teletovic said.

    "He's a great character.

"He always goes as hard as he can and he motivates players."

    THE NATIONAL TEAM

Teletovic had hoped to make his mark last summer in Lithuania at the EuroBasket with Bosnia and Herzegovina but things didn't go according to plan.

At the 24-team event, he averaged almost 14 points and six rebounds per game but the team won just two of their five games and didn't progress from the opening group stage.

In February, Bosnia and Herzegovina handed the national team reins to veteran tactician Aleksandar (Aco) Petrovic, a former national team boss of Croatia and the brother of the late Drazen Petrovic.

The team will take on Latvia, the Netherlands, Georgia and Romania in the EuroBasket 2013 Qualification Round.

    Teletovic is optimistic.

"We have a new coach, now," Teletovic said.

"There are some good things going on with the Bosnian national team.

"They're organized and I think we're going to have a very good team for the summer, the qualifications."

For inquiring minds back home who would like to know if Teletovic will be in the Bosnia and Herzegovina line-up this summer, he has this answer.

    "Of course," he said.

Man, have not posted here for a while - I have been on vacation in Bosnia. I think I will update the thread with news on Teletović and my thoughts on our path to Eurobasket 2013 in Slovenija.

In my opinion, Teletović will sign before the season starts this year. It is just a matter of time and money. He will definitely make a nice impact on the team, and he could make a great tandem with Deron Williams, Brook Lopez, and possibly Dwight Howard (who has requested a trade to Brooklyn yet again). Once Teletović officially signs and the tickets are released, I am going to buy tickets to his game(s) in Sacramento, and I will bring my Bosnian flag and maybe scarves, too.

Now for the Bosnian NT. We have Eurobasket 2013 qualifiers which begin mid-August and end early/mid-September. But before that, we have a friendly cup competition to compete in, and you might remember it from last year. It is called the Adecco Cup, which is between all former Yugoslav republics (not including Kosovo). Last year, we lost to Slovenia (host then and now) 59-52 for the bronze medal. Not bad, but I think this year we will win that bronze, if not take the silver (we beat 2 out of three ex-Yu opponents at Eurobasket last year, Croatia and Montenegro). Now for the actual qualifiers. I am confident we will qualify. The difference between UEFA Euro and FIA Europe qualifiers are that there are no play-offs here in qualifying. It is a straight up, top two go for sure, and the best four 3rd-place teams qualify, too. For those who do not remember our group, here it is -- Georgia, BiH, Latvia, Romania, and Netherlands. Starting from August 15th, there will be games every three days. Every team will face the other two times, once at home and the other away. Now, I think our first game will be key to if we qualify, as it will set the group´s tone for the rest of the way. We play Latvia, one of the three competitors for first place, and if we beat them (it is a home game), I think our chances will increase and we will have a comfortable spot for a while (we face the minnows Netherlands after Latvia). If we win game one against Latvia and game three is versus Georgia. Winning those two games is pretty much securing top two, barring upsets with game against Netherlands and Romania. Finally, I will show my preferred starting five for the Eurobasket 2013 qualifications. Here it is ---

    PG) Wrigh
    SG) Mitrović
    SF) Đedović
    PF) Teletović
    C) Sinanović

So yeah, that is my take on Eurobasket 2013 qualifiers for our NT.

Mirza Teletovic has officially signed with the Brooklyn Nets. The deal gives him a 3 year tenure in Brooklyn, along with a nice paycheck of 15 million dollars. Hopefully Teletovic does well there. I will try and go to his game in Sacramento, and bring my Bosnian flag with me.
