RP team gets tough draw in Fiba-Asia

THE SAN Miguel-RP squad will face a tough challenge in their quest to earn a slot to the 2008 Beijing Olympics as the team got drawn in the tough Group B in the 24th Fiba Asia Men’s Championship in Tokushima, Japan from July 28 to August 5.
The Philippine squad is grouped with host Japan, Qatar and Syria following the draw of lots held in Tokushima Wednesday morning.
The Southeast Asia top qualifier was represented by the newly-appointed SBP-BAP executive director Patrick Gregorio.
Last May, the National squad suffered tough beatings from Syrian representatives in the 17th Fiba Asia Champions Cup in Iran.
During the elimination round, the import-laden Al Jalaa Aleppo of Syria handed SMC-RP an 80-114 beating, which was duplicated by a 77-109 drubbing during the semifinal round.
Qatar also did their share of whipping the Filipino warriors as its Al Rayaan ball club scored a 75-95 victory in their game for third place.
But without any import, the Philippines is looking forward to a very competitive game against any of their tormentors.
Host China has a huge edge to advance to the quarterfinal round after they were bracketed in Group C together with Taiwan, Kazakhstan and Hong Kong.
Lebanon, Jordan, India and another Southeast Asian team Indonesia is in Group A. Group D teams include South Korea, Iran, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.
Two teams in each bracket will advance to the crossover quarterfinal round. The teams will play knockout games from the quarterfinals onwards. (RCM)

only the 2 top teams of each group will advance to the q-finals...all teams are capable of beating us black and blue as evidenced in the last Asian Club Championships, albeit, with imports.
IMHO, the must-wins are against the Syrians and Qataris...we could place first and second and still face formidable teams of , which i assume is Group D. Those teams are, maybe perennial powerhouse South Korea and darkhorse Iran..both have imposing 7 ft ++ centers
but before that, it would be a test of characters for Team Pilipinas to get past this group. the luck of the draw worked against us this time, let's just hope we get past this unscathe

This report is highly questionable, but the scenario is possible.
First, the said groupings are exactly the same posted by Karim last Saturday, claiming that the draw was held prematurely -- a report that was proven false. Unless Karim's source has fortune-telling abilities.
Second, it's highly unlikely that the draw, held supposedly today, a Wednesday, would be covered in an article in the sports section of SunStar Cebu on the same day -- unless it was printed as "breaking news." Whereas the bigger dailies such as Inquirer or Star have none.
In any case, because we're unseeded, the RP team will likely land in a tough group anyway. The top 8 teams from the 2005 Fiba Champs (China, Lebanon, Qatar, Korea, Japan, Iran, Jordan, S.Arabia) will be scattered evenly across the 4 groups (except Japan), while the unseeded, lower 8 teams will fill in the remaining slots in random order.
Among the unseeded teams, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, RP and Syria can be considered at par with the top 8; hence, whatever group any of these 4 countries will end up in can be considered a "Group of Death."
Ideally, these 4 would also be scattered evenly across the 4 groups, but since it's random, it's possible that 2 of them would end up as groupmates.
Worst case scenario: Qatar, Iran, Syria, Philippines (all 3 teams have beaten RP recently) -- all 4 teams are contenders
Moderate scenario: China, Jordan, Taiwan, Philippines (China Team B is unknown to us but we've known to split games vs. Jordan and Taiwan) -- all 4 teams are contenders
or Korea, Japan, Philippines, India -- 3 teams are contenders
Best case scenario: Lebanon, S. Arabia, Philippines, Hong Kong (we've shown we can give Lebanon a good fight, while the other 2 are mere decorations) -- 2 teams are sure to advance to the quarterfinals

Syria have Brazilian "imports". They're bragging that these "BraSYrians" are legitimate NT players just by justifying the principle that there are quite a number of Syrian immigrants in Brazil. We can't contest given the fact that we have controversial players in our NT line up as well...

In the said news, topseed in the "A" bracket is being occupied by Lebanon which is highly unlikely since that should be occupied by the defending champion...
Qatar, which placed 3rd in the last FIBA-Asia should be in bracket "C" and not "B"
Add to the fact the host Japan won't let that happen

Correct groupings flashed during the PBA game
Group A - China, Jordan, Iran, PILIPINAS
Group B - Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Japan (host)
Group C - Qatar, India, Kazakhstan, Indonesia
Group D - Korea, Hong Kong, Syria, Chinese Taipei
Relatively a good draw for Pilipinas....all we have to do is beat Iran, which IMO, is doable, and beat Jordan which maybe tricky, but highly probable...facing China Team B this early is a relief and it means we wont be playing them in the elimination round. Fair enuff

Japan had it easy, they can be at the top 2 if they can beat 2nd tier Saudi and UAE...same goes to Lebanon...lucky bastards.
Qatar also have a very good draw, as do the Kazakhs
Another tough group is D..i expect a dogfight between Korea, Taiwan and Syria for the 2 slots.

So, the tread title still holds true. i still categorize Group A as the Group of Death... China Team B, Iran with their 7 footers, Jordan with their naturalized player and Pilpinas are all capable of advancing to the next round, but, at the same time, any team can be eliminated just as easily.
