Pistons trade Delfino to Raptors for 2 second-round draft picks

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- The Detroit Pistons traded guard Carlos Delfino to the Toronto Raptors on Friday for second-round draft picks in 2009 and 2010.
"We appreciate everything Carlos did for us while he was here and we wish him all the best with Toronto," Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said.

Delfino, from Argentina, was drafted 25th overall by Detroit in 2003, and averaged 4.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 180 games with the Pistons.
During the 2006-07 regular season, the 6-foot-6 guard averaged 5.2 points and 3.2 rebounds in 16.8 minutes while appearing in all 82 games. He played in all 16 of Detroit's playoff games, averaging 2.3 points and 1.3 rebounds in 8.4 minutes.
The 25-year-old player is set to make just over $1.8 million next season.
"Carlos is a talented basketball player that should thrive in our system," Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo said. "Like many international players that come to the league, he has much more professional experience than his NBA resume suggests."
Delfino spent four seasons with Reggio Calabria (2000-02) and Skipper Bologna (2003-04) of the Italian league before joining the NBA. He was a member of Argentina's gold medal-winning team in the 2004 Olympics.
Detroit's other first-round pick in the 2003 draft was Darko Milicic, a 7-foot center from Serbia and Montenegro taken No. 2 overall behind Cleveland's LeBron James and ahead of Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Milicic appeared in 96 games over 2 1/2 seasons before being traded to Orlando in February 2006.

Here is a guy who never really had a chance to prove himself, because of the great lineup ahead of him, that brings some elite-team experience to a young team and fills its weakest position. Plus, he is the kind of defender the Raptors don't have many of.

I think there is a pretty good chance he will start before the season is over and done with, it is a very good player who did some quality work for the Pistons without really getting the chance to prove himself cinsistantly.
I think the Pistons never understood how good of a player they had.

Every time he got minutes (like in Pistons' useless late regular season games, or in last year's World Cup) he proved he can also shoot a little. So, I like his chances in Toronto.
Toronto is going to be a favorite in the eastern conference.

This was definitely a good trade for the raps. IMO, everyone benefits from this because detroit gets rid of cap space while the raptors who are looking to improve the 3 spot gets an undervalued wingman (possibly replacing mo pete).
Our next target should be Nociono imo (BC said in a local radio interview that he's looking through the RFA list).

MADRID (NBA) - Spanish international Jorge Garbajosa has welcomed the signing of Carlos Delfino by the Toronto Raptors.
Argentina guard Delfino joined the Canadian franchise earlier this week from the Detroit Pistons and will play alongside Garbajosa next season in Toronto.
Delfino, a member of Argentina's gold medal-winning team at the Olympics in Athens, was a first-round selection by Detroit in 2003.
He played in all 82 games this season, posting career highs of 5.2 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.
"Delfino is a player with great physical strength and has improved his technique a lot," said Toronto power forward Garbajosa.
"I know his game well from our time in Italy."
Garbajosa and Delfino are no strangers to each other, with the Spaniard having played against Delfino in the Italian Lega A from 2002 until 2004.
Garbajosa played for Benetton Treviso while Delfino defended the Fortitudo Bologna colours.
Moreover, both players came face-to-face in last year's FIBA World Championship semi-final, which saw Spain beat Argentina on their road to glory.
