GENEVA -- Spain has won the right to host the men's basketball world championship in 2014.
The board of governing body FIBA picked Spain on Saturday ahead of rival candidates China and Italy.
The 24-team tournament will be played in Madrid plus Bilbao, Granada, Seville, and Las Palmas on the Canary Islands from Aug. 30-Sept. 14, 2014.
Organizers say they need to spend $439 million building three or four arenas. Spain won the 2006 worlds that was staged in Japan.
Spain won the 2006 worlds in Japan when Pau Gasol -- then a Memphis Grizzlies player and now with the Los Angeles Lakers -- was the tournament MVP.
Spain beat Greece 70-47 in the final. The United States defeated Argentina in the bronze-medal match.
Spain will defend its title when Turkey hosts the upcoming tournament in 2010.

oh man... I really hate Spanish commentators when it comes to basketball... I think they are suited to commentating football but basketball is just not right..

I watch the 1997 MacDonald's Open final before between the Jordan led-Chicago and I think its Olympiacos or Pana... can't remember... but that game has one of the worst basketball commentating I ever had... its horrible... I tried to find other copy of it with different language even if its not English but I can't find anything...

Now they have the World Championships... they will be even more passionate now since their team is a world power...

Yes, but they were not chosen. We'll have:
    2010 WC - Turkey
    2012 Olympics - London
    2014 WC - Spain

I didn't understand, I was thinking that in the future (after 2014) the international competitions would be held in Europe... Spain (Madrid) has, still, the chance of organize the Olympics in 2016!!!!

It seems fair. I don't think there is a country whose basketball evolved as much as Spain, not only regarding their NT but also their stadiums and their youth system.

Yes, but last Eurobasket's organization was so so.

So FIBA should have not used the "PROMOTION" term to justify the selection... i mean, basketball in Spain is already at top! Plus they just had the last Euro Championships... i don't understand this selection, really.

ESP – Pau Gasol happy Spain will host 2014 FIBA World Championship

LOS ANGELES (2014 FIBA World Championship) - Celebrations following the announcement that Spain are to host the 2014 FIBA World Championship have spread to Los Angeles where the country’s basketball icon Pau Gasol is competing in the NBA play-offs with the NBA's Lakers.

The MVP of the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan, Gasol was elated to hear that his homeland would stage the sport’s most prestigious international event.

“Obviously I’m happy for our country and our federation,” Gasol said.

“It’s a reflection of how things are getting done in our country, and how well we are doing as far as sports and what a great moment we are going through overall.

“I’m glad FIBA recognized that and put that responsibly on our shoulders.”

Gasol, who turns 29 on July 6, is currently in the heat of an NBA Western Conference play-off final battle with the Lakers against the Denver Nuggets.

He indicated earlier this year that he was uncertain about representing Spain at the EuroBasket in Poland later this year.

As he gets older, his appearances for the national team are likely to dwindle.

When asked if he would play in 2014, Gasol said: “It’s 2014. I don’t know if I’ll get there. We’ll see.

“It would definitely be special. I was able to play a European Championship (in Spain) a couple years back and I know how much expectation and love our people have for us, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to play at that point and time.

“I don’t know. It depends on the moment in my career, and my body.”

Gasol hails from Barcelona and would like to see the city added as one of the venues for games at the 2014 FIBA World Championship. Spain’s bid was successful by putting forward Madrid, Bilbao, Granada, Las Palmas and Seville as host cities.

“I would like to but apparently it’s not one of the cities that is going to be hosting,” he said.

“I already saw all the cities, and it’s unfortunate that Barcelona is not one of them. It’s my home town, and the city that I was born in and I think it would be great if one day the city of Barcelona would embrace or was also given the opportunity to host and be a part of the tournament.”

Spain will attempt to defend their world title next year at the FIBA World Championship in Turkey, and it could come down to another Spain v USA battle as happened in last year’s Olympic final that the Americans won.

Gasol had to compete against his Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant in that title game and the same scenario may play out against in Turkey.

However, the Spanish star said: “Well, that is a big question mark, if either of us are going to be involved in that tournament.

“I was able to win a gold medal with my team in 2006 in Japan and that was fantastic. Right now, I have to pick and choose my goals and my tournaments because I’m really focused on trying to get an NBA championship - to maximize my opportunities with the Lakers, the team that you know pays my check.”

Anyone know of how to possibly get a hand of the Bid and Event Manual? I have seen the one of Eurobasket, but I was seeing if there is a FIBA one out there. Also, any old bid material out there, like books?

Go Chicago or Rio de Janeiro!
The Rules learned in the Prediction game.
    1: Brazil is always disappointing
2: Never dismiss Argentina solely because of age.
3: Never bet against Spain in a knockout game, unless it is against the US.

Default Barcelona will be part of the 2014 WC

GENEVA/SAN JUAN - (2014 FIBA World Championship) The city of Barcelona has been confirmed as sixth and new venue for the FIBA World Championship to be played in Spain in 2014. The games will be held in the 20.000 seat Palau San Jordi.

The decision was made during today’s FIBA Central Board meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Barcelona will host half of the Eight Final Round, Quarter Final Round and Semi Final Round games. Madrid will host the other half of those games and the gold and bronce medal games.

The games of the First Round will be played in Bilbao, Granada, Las Palmas, and Seville as was already announced during the assignment ceremony in Geneva last year.

FIBA President Bob Elphinston is excited about the news: “This is a positive change to what has been proposed to us in an already excellent bid. Barcelona is the cradle of Spanish basketball and we therefore gladly accept the proposal.”

Barcelona can look back at a rich tradition in organizing top FIBA events, amongst them the 1992 Olympics with the legendary Dream Team and the 1997 EuroBasket.

José Luis Sáez, President of the Spanish Basketball Federation worked hard on including the Catalan capital: “We are very happy to present Barcelona as a new 2014 venue for the 2014 World Championship. There is a rich tradition and also a great passion for our sport and our organization will profit from that.”

and it's worth noting this will indeed be officially the 'World Cup' and no longer the world championship. Kind of pointless to me, but whatever.

Do not worry. It would not be as bad as what you "organized". Full mouth about a "basketball country" and the attendance was ridicoulous. Ah, you based your opinion in your typical Lithuanian hate on Spain. I am sorry you are a small country with small brains. Your problem, not mine.

I've been wondering that too and I think I made a post about this a few months ago but here goes anyways..........IF we win the Olympics this year I think we will see a mass exodus of our key guys no longer wanting to play for the National Team, we'll hear the same lines of "I think its time to give some of the younger guys a chance" and so on. I believe these coming Olympics are the last that Coach K, his staff and Jerry Colangelo were committed to as well so, assuming that they leave the program it will probably be time for a semi-reboot.

So that being said I think these Olympics would be the last international competition for Lebron (29 years old by 2014 WC), Kobe (35), Wade (32), Bosh (30), Deron Williams (30), Chris Paul (29), Dwight Howard (28) and Carmelo Anthony (30) if we win. I also see Durant, Rose and Love (if they all make the London Olympic team) taking a break from the national team and possibly coming back for 2016 Olympics, just a hunch as they already won a WC.

The good news is we have a number of young stars to fill in- Blake Griffin, John Wall, Kyrie Irving, Derrick Williams, Lamarcus Aldridge, Andrew Bynum, Rudy Gay, Eric Gordon, Russell Westbrook, Andre Igoudala, Paul Millsap, James Harden, Al Jefferson, Josh Smith, Kyle Lowry, Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry, Brook Lopez, Roy Hibbert, Demarcus Cousins, Kendrick Perkins.............a lot of these guys will be in their primes around 2014 and maybe we'd even see a couple of the current college stars if they progress well in the NBA starting next year.............Anthony Davis, Harrison Barnes, Perry Jones, etc.
