UST coasts to a 94-75 romp vs UP

    By Jasmine W. Payo

MANILA, Philippines -- The University of Santo Tomas reminded the University of the Philippines it still has a lot of growing up to do in the UAAP men's basketball as the Tigers walloped the Maroons, 94-75, Saturday at the PhilSports Arena.

Dylan Ababou, who just recovered from a right hand fracture, took command in the first half for a game-high 20 points in the Tigers' first triumph in two games.

Rookie point guard Jeric Fortuna helped spark the early run by scoring 10 of his 11 markers in the opening quarter, while reigning Most Valuable Player Jervy Cruz sustained the onslaught to finish with 15 points despite nursing injuries in his hamstring and ankle.

"Jervy is just 80 percent," said coach Pido Jarencio after the Tigers recovered from a 78-73 opening-day setback versus the University of the East.

"But Fortuna, he's really good, he'll be the future star point guard of UST. As I've said, we'll always come up with a surprise."

For a while, the Maroons looked capable of pulling off another upset win with a surprising 17-9 start against the 2006 champion Tigers.

But the Maroons -- who surprisingly crushed National University, 86-72, last Sunday -- turned cold as the Tigers wrapped up the first period with a 15-3 rally to wrest the lead at 26-21.

By halftime, the Tigers pulled away with a 61-43 advantage built on a notable 56.8 percent shooting clip.

The Maroons, who lost all 14 assignments last season by an average of 20.8 points, trailed by as many as 27 points, 75-48, in the third quarter.

    The scores:

    UST 94 -- Ababou 20, Cruz 15, Fortuna 11, Canlas 11, Allera 11, Cuan 9, Fenequito 6, Camus 6, Bautista 3, Taylor 2, Wong 0, Vargas 0, Afuang 0, Gile 0.

    UP 75 -- Sison 20, Pajela 9, Fortu 8, Agbayani 8, Sorongon 6, Marfori 5, Gamboa 5, De Asis 5, Reyes 4, Co 3, Astorga 2, Lopez 0, Dela Victoria 0, Maniego 0, Hipolito 0, Braganza 0.

    Quarters: 26-21, 61-43, 81-58, 94-75

Dylan Ababou - Mr. All Around

I think he is one of the most complete player in the UAAP, and he is really doing a great job in the first 2 games of the UST Tigers in Season 71.

Dylan is a great ball handler for a guy, who stands at 6'3, and he is also one of the best athlete in the amateur league.

He reminds me alot of a local version of Scottie Pippen because he is also capable of playing the Point Forward position in the UAAP.

I expect him to be a more consistent scorer this season, and if he would work harder in improving his weaknesses i can see him being voted in the UAAP Mythical First Team.

    2008 UAAP Season Stats

    17.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.0 spg, 56.8 FG%, 71.4 FT%

Well, yep, limited minutes in the second half resulted to limited rebounds for the UAAP "rebounding devil". Still contributed decent points though with 15...

Dylan Ababou was quite amazing in that game, decent performance as well for rookie Jeric Fortuna... I am still waiting for that big game from Francis Allera who amazed me with his scoring explosions during the previous CCL... he has that killer bombs a la James Yap, which might be even deadlier than Khasim Mirza's...

BTW, wazzup with Mirza not playing in that game?

Ababou plays like he's the go to guy of UST, he step up, Because jervy is on foul trouble, good game, hope he remains consistent throughout this season.

Another classic game between FEU and UST

    My points from the game:

-A BAD game for Jervy Cruz, having just 3 rebounds is his worst career rebounding performance... Jervy's numbers is consistently dropping since his monster debut game and I don't know why...

-A BAD game for Dylan Ababou, averaging 18ppg coming into the game, I expected more from him... I observed his lack of aggressiveness...

-Mark Canlas didn't follow up on his monster game between DLSU...

-Japs Cuan proved quite devastating for UST... they lacked stability on the point...

-Rookie Clark Bautista showed his ineffectiveness in the point guard spot...

-Khasim Mirza is looking more like Migs de Asis -- breaking out early in their rookie season then virtually a nobody in the next, hopefully it's just a sophomore jinx...

-This is the breakout game for Francis Allera that I've been looking for! Too bad it didn't churn out a win...

-A BIG game for Benedict Fernandez... he was just unconscious from outside...

It looks like UST is having an early losing streak... hopefully this bleeding stops very soon or else, byebye Final 4...

its pretty hard going up against a contender when your team has injured players and/or missing them due to injures.
Jervy is still not 100% recovered. i have a feeling its no just the hamstring thats bothering him.
i actually havent seen Dylan and Badong play consistently. Badong is consistent as a compliment to Jervy but thats about it.
CB isnt a true point. so i understand that he isnt used to setting players up or giving dimes(which is very obvious in the game)
Japs is the heart and soul of UST Tigers since the championship year.
    khasim is hurt like Jervy
kiko was great, needs to eat some more bananas though
FEU was actually consistent and was executing very well as a team.

No excuses, FEU was better last Sunday. USt was against a lot of injuries but they still played with everything(well maybe not all of them). I think this is a good exposure for the rookies but that game will be felt around the startof the 2nd round.

What's with these short PGs? DLSU has freshman rookie PG LA Revilla playing well for that team, and UST has Jeric Fortuna has bee playing well for UST.

Take note that Jeric was cut from the RP Youth Team, so I didn't expect much from him. And yet look at him now.

Take note that Khazim was not a FRESHMAN-rookie last year. He played a couple of years for a team outside of the NCAA or UAAP, so I don't really know how many years of eligibility he has in the UAAP.

This is what I like about Dylan's game, he chooses his spots wisely which is evident from his very good FG%... however on some occasions, he forces situations which results to TO's... he should limit that...

Good game for rookie Clark Bautista, he is now coming to his own including hitting that clutch triple that sent the game into OT thus preventing UST from going deep beneath the standings... playmaking is still quite suspect though...

That Galinato guy from ADu is also something to look out for... he has good post moves, a reliable midrange jumper and some defensive prowess as well... a breakout player IMO...

^Galinato and Japeth Aguilar were teammates at Mapua HS. Galinato went on to play for DLSU but was booted out due to academics.

I still can't believe the way Galinato is playing right now.

This is a guy who bounced from one Team B, to another. I know he was with SBC Team B, and prior to that as JonarSabilano mentioned, at DLSU's Team B.

And yet look at him now. His story should serve as inspiration for other players out there: Don't give up in trying to find a home somewhere. Sometimes, it works out.

Dylan Ababou and Jervy Cruz are going to be a first round picks in the 2009 PBA Draft, and I hope Air 21 Express, Redbull Barako and Brgy. Ginebra will draft them next year.

By the way they have a game today againts the NU Bulldogs.
