NBA rookie Marc Gasol knew it was going to be a tough season with the Memphis Grizzlies in terms of wins and losses, and so it's proving to be.

Voted the ACB's top player last season while starting at center for Akasvayu Girona, the Spain international signed a contract with the Grizzlies and has played big minutes for a very young Grizzlies squad that has been losing.

The team is mired in a seven-game losing streak that on Thursday cost coach Marc Iavaroni his job.

Other than losing games, the biggest difference for Gasol when comparing this season to last has been the number of games played in the NBA.

"It's true that it's much tougher to play this schedule," Gasol said.

"As a rookie, you hit a lot of walls. You're still trying to figure everything out when you're not winning many games.

"If you win more, you probably don't feel it at all."

In Spain, Gasol rarely played more than twice a week but on numerous occasions in North America, he is playing back-to-back contests.

Gasol has even played four games in five nights.

Yes, he definitely hit the rookie wall big time in that game. I saw some parts and he had foul trouble really too soon...

Yeah. This was his first game in the NBA without a single point. Statistically, it was his worst game by far. Fortunately, the kid is having a very good rookie season. He's not quite the Rookie of the Year like his brother, but he's a very good rookie.

Tonight Memphis plays against Oklahoma City. I think Gasol should have a good 15-point game.

Also, Gasol will play in the Rookie-Sophomore game during the All-Star break. Gasol or Brook Lopez will start for the Rookies; both are having equally good seasons with Greg Oden lagging a little behind both of them.

You're a genius, dude. 15 points (6-8), and 5 rebounds in a loss to OKC.

    It's a great feeling.

Marc played pretty well against Pau last night. Marc shot 5-6 and scored 13 points. Pau played better, of course. He scored 24 points.

Memphis beat Washington by 15 points last night to win their first game in the last twelve. Gasol was the big man for the team. He scored 22 points (7-11), 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks for Memphis. Mayo had 33 points (12-22) and Gay had 22 points, 8 rebounds.

Marc had 22 points (9-12), 15 rebounds against the Indiana Pacers last night. Indiana must've been worried about Marc, because Nesterovic played 20 minutes. Marc scored the final basket for Memphis, but OJ Mayo missed the chance to send the game to overtime. Indiana won 104-99.

    Now that's a big man's block!

Marc played against big brother Pau last night in Los Angeles. I think this was the third time the two brothers have tried to kill each other this season. Marc finally had the better game; he scored 17 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks. Big brother Pau scored 13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.

Lakers Beat Grizzlies - March 3, 2009, AP, by Ken Peters

...Marc Gasol, four years younger than the 28-year-old Pau, outdid his brother, scoring 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for Memphis.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson noticed Pau has some difficulty against his sibling.

“Yes, he does. It’s good,” Jackson said with a smile. “Good for Pau. Good for Marc, too.”

Memphis coach Lionel Hollins mentioned the Grizzlies’ lack of fast breaks and offensive rebounds, but praised their effort and Marc Gasol’s performance in particular.

“Marc came to battle. He had a sibling rival and he met the challenge. He battled Pau, beat him up a little bit,” Hollins said. “But the Lakers won the game.”

I think it's safe to say Marc had his best game in the NBA so far (vs Clippers):
    20 pts (7/8 FG, 6/9 FT)
    10 assists
    8 rebs
    3 steals
    3 blocks

    Wow.

    Wow.
Not bad at all! Thanks for reporting this, Rik. The Clippers don't have the strongest frontcourt, but Marcus Camby is still a very good defender and the Clippers do have a lot of beef up front. I think Marc seems to play best against the bigger, stronger defenses in the NBA rather than the smaller, leaner defenses.

    New career-high: 30 pts (11-15) + 13 rebs + 3 blocks as the Grizzlies lose to the 76ers.

Marc Gasol has been playing great after the All-Star break. I personally thought he would be fatigued after playing 60 games so far in the season but this comes to show u that he's in great shape and his physical fitness and stamina r still at a high level (very impressive for a rookie, and hope he continues playing like this )

I agree, Khalid. Normally these big rookies seem to get "winded" and lose their stamina at this time of year, but Gasol is still going strong.

He had 18 points, 4 rebounds in a loss to Yao's Houston team. That's a pretty tough match-up, but he did a great job offensively.

Click on the link to read the whole article. Basically, Hollinger says that Lopez is his ROY and Gasol is number 2.
Rookie of the Year Talk -- by John Hollinger, ESPN, March 12, 2009

...But where Rose and Mayo become impossible to support is when you put them up against the big guys. Mayo, for instance, isn't even the best rookie on his own team -- that would be center Marc Gasol, who ranks fourth among rookies in PER at 17.15 and at 30.5 minutes per game can't be dismissed as a part-timer.

It's not just that Gasol is a more efficient scorer than Mayo, shooting 53.9 percent to Mayo's 43.5 percent. The real shocker is in the passing game. Gasol has a higher assist ratio than Mayo, meaning that, compared to Mayo, Gasol creates more assists per possession used. And his assists per minute are close to Mayo's, even though Mayo is often the one initiating the Memphis offense. Throw in the rather obvious edge Gasol has on the boards and it's a no-brainer. The only reason to support Mayo over his teammate is if you're so blinded by scoring averages that you ignore every other column on the stat sheet.

Yet Gasol is only second on my Rookie of the Year ballot. Because while his advantage over Mayo is clear, I'd argue there's an even greater disparity between Brook Lopez and Derrick Rose...

I realize I'm swimming against the tide here, but look past the hype machine and just check facts. Lopez and Gasol have been the two best rookies this year, and Lopez in particular is a very deserving Rookie of the Year winner. If he doesn't get it, it says more about us than it does about him.
Hollinger is right. It's star power and highlights that wins the MVP and ROY, not productivity.

In fact , right now i agree with him.

Imho the ROY list right now would be
    1. Lopez
    2. Gasol
    3. Rose
    4. Mayo
    5. Love
    6. Westbrook
    7. Gordon
    8. Beasley
    9. Oden
    10. Chamers
    11. Rudy

The players in the positions 7 to 11 could easily change.

Marc broke the record for the best shooting percentage by a rookie, taking this one from ... Pau Gasol.

One fact to be noted is that his eval per game is better than OJ Mayo's one.

Great season for the big center(and big guy from the Gasol family). He didn't broke up as Pau did, but he showed in a much more difficult context for a center with this Mayo/Gay team things that confirms he is a future great.

Marc Gasol scored 19 points (7-12) and 8 rebounds in his season finale against the Atlanta Hawks. Memphis won the game.

In his rookie season, Gasol averaged 11.9 points and 7.4 rebounds while shooting 53% from the field. That's extremely good for a rookie center.

In games against his brother's LA Lakers, Marc averaged 13.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.2 blocks.

It looks like Gasol will be in the league for a long time to come. He's a big boy with some good skill; there is always room on any team for someone like him.
"I really like the attitudes of eagles. They never give up. When they grab a fish or something else, they never let it go. It doesn't matter. In a book, they write they find a skeleton of [an] eagle and there is no fish. It means that the fish beat him and killed him, but he didn't let go." -- Donatas Motiejunas
