National players suffered an accident this morning when the bus they were in hit a wall near a swimming pool in Cabinda. Carlos Morais, Eduardo Ventura and Adolfo Quimbamba received treatment for minor injuries, while Olímpio Cipriano (forehead) and Joaquim Gomes "Kikas" (three stitches) had some more serious injuries, but nothing worrying. Everything is OK now.

Thank God the injuries weren't very serious cuz from the pic the accident looked quite bad.
(I have a hunch that the bus driver was indulging in some illegal activities before the accident cuz who the hell ends up hitting a wall like that at such a speed. But then again, i've heard so many stories about how people drive in Africa so i'm not surprised)

BORMIO, Italy - Jesse Young's 22 points and seven rebounds led the Canadian Senior Men's National Team to an 87-79 win over Angola in an exhibition game on Wednesday.

ANG – Kikas, Angola geared up to face former coach Palma of Jordan

LUANDA (2010 FIBA World Championship) – By winning their 10th African title in the last 20 years last summer in Libya, Angola sealed their passage to 2010 FIBA World Championship.

It has set up another exciting year for the Angolans, along with a complex mission.

Angola captain Joaquim Gomes, better known in Angola circles as ‘Kikas’, knows that upcoming Group A clashes with Argentina, Serbia, Australia and wild-card team Germany will be anything but easy.

Even group minnows Jordan, the bronze medalists at last year’s FIBA Asia Championship and a side led by former Angola coach Mario Palma, will be tricky opponents.

“Against Jordan, it will be a tough game as we may play on equal level,” Kikas said to FIBA.com.

“I am quite sure that Jordan will come to that game with a clear objective to defeat us given the circumstances of both teams.

“Coach Mario Palma knows all of us very well and he will never want to lose to us.

“This game may determine which team between us (Angola or Jordan) will move to the next round.”

Jordan’s coach, Guinea-Bissau-born Mario Palma - the most successful coach in Angola Basketball history with four African titles (1999/01/03/05), followed by Vitorino Cunha - is hot topic of conversation among the Angolans.

Angola and Jordan will go up against each other on Day 2 of the competition.

“I do not know much about the Jordan team,” said Kikas, the MVP of the 2009 Afrobasket in Libya, “but if they qualified, it is because they deserved to and have a good squad.”

Qualifying for the next round, just as they did in 2006, is Angola’s priority.

There truly are no easy opponents in Group A for Angola.

They will face EuroBasket silver medalists Serbia in their opening game before taking on Jordan, and then Argentina – the number one team in the FIBA World Rankings.

“This is toughest group in recent years,” Kikas said.

“Our main objective is to improve our classification from the last World Championship.”

Kikas has an idea on how at least one team will play in Group A.

“Argentina will probably fight to win the championship,” he said.

Germany and Australia are teams the Angolans know well.

“Germany has been improving very much in recent years,” Kikas said.

“Australia, everyone knows they have a good squad.”

With a renewed squad, Serbia is one of the toughest hurdles to overcome.

They made a stunning run to the EuroBasket Final in Poland last year before falling to Spain.

The Blues are clearly a powerhouse in the making.

“Serbia has many players in the best leagues in the world such as the NBA,” Kikas said.

“They always add good young players. They are tough to play against.”

Though Angola are always in the big tournaments, they go into the event in Turkey as the second lowest ranked in the group above Jordan.

This does not cause the Angolan captain sleepless nights.

“It is obvious that everyone knows that we lack height and weight, but our talent and will on the court are not to be ignored,” Kikas warned.

Angola’s preparations for Turkey 2010 have yet to be set in stone.

Kikas says this will clearly be a crucial part of their summer.

“Our performance in the World Championship is in the Federation’ hands,” Kikas said. “We’ll need a good training camp and need to play against strong teams.”

After Palma, the basketball federation signed Angola-born Alberto Carvalho, who led the country to the 2006 World Championship and to the Olympics in China.

Mozambique-born Portuguese coach Luis Magalhães took the helm last year and guided the team to the African championship.

He is in position to lead the country through Turkey 2010.

These are changes that do not affect the players’ performances, Kikas says.

“Each coach has his own philosophy, and coach Magalhães has worked well,” Kikas said.

“He brought in more harmony among the team. He settled well.”

ANG – Gomes has burning desire to win games in Turkey

LUANDA (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Angola's Joaquim 'Kikas' Gomes is no longer satisfied with just winning African titles.

The 29-year-old has done that a few times already during his decade of basketball with the national team.

    He's hungry for much more.

Gomes wants to win games at the FIBA World Championship, just as Angola did four years ago in Japan when he helped them prevail in three of the six matches they played.

Had Dirk Nowitzki not rescued Germany with a 47-point performance in a triple-overtime thriller in their Preliminary Round meeting, Angola's record would have been even better.

"I wouldn't say we're in the top five teams," Gomes said to FIBA.com, "but we definitely can compete at the high level."

The Angolans have captured 10 Afrobasket gold medals since 1988, including the last six in a row.

When they leave Africa, though, whether it’s at Olympic Games or in FIBA World Championships, wins have normally been tough to come by.

    Building self-belief

Angola do not have a towering presence underneath the basket like a lot of national teams.

In Gomes, they have a fighter, a 6ft 7in power forward/center who doesn’t back down from anyone.

His teammates battle, but some lack the self-belief that he possesses.

"I hate when I'm talking with my teammates, and they say, 'Hey, let's just try and play well,'" Gomes said.

"I get mad at them sometimes and say, 'Hey, we have to leave this (attitude) behind. We're not coming here to play well, we're coming here to try and win.'”

Gomes has never been short of confidence.

When asked why, he said: "When I was young, I was always very ambitious and I still am.

"I didn't know what I was going to be. I knew that I wanted to be somebody big, somebody that could do something big.

"I didn't know what at the time."

Basketball allowed him to channel his desire to achieve something.

"My older sister played when I was eight or nine," he said.

"I was the youngest (in the family) and didn't want to stay at home by myself and she took me to sit and watch her.

"Then I started getting the feeling and then once I finished kindergarten, or first grade, I moved away from town and started going to a school that had a big basketball program and didn't have anything else to do, so I played basketball.

"When I was 10 years old, I was taller than everyone else. Everyone kept telling me to go and play basketball."

Gomes' mother and father had always stressed the importance of education to their children, so he understood he had to focus on the books and not just basketball if he wanted to play the game.

"My parents didn't want me to (play) because once you get into a team, you start forgetting school," he said.

"But my dad, I love my dad, and he always told me, 'You can do whatever you want to do, as long as you don't forget school. If school is good, then I will be on your side.'

"So I said, 'Okay, I'm going to do my best to keep my grades up.'

"He said, 'Yes, if you do that - feel free to play ball.'"

Not surprisingly, basketball eventually took Gomes to the United States where he played college basketball for Valparaiso in Indiana.

    Everyone loves a winner

After a solid career at Valparaiso, Gomes set out to play the game professionally.

He has spent the majority of his career competing in Angola though he also played in Europe after leaving college.

"Basketball is a very special sport in Angola," Gomes said.

"Everyone loves soccer, but basketball wins much more than soccer. So when it comes to basketball, everyone is into it. Everyone wants to watch games.”

In 2007, Angola hosted the Afrobasket.

"Basketball is a huge pastime for a lot of people - young people, old people,” Gomes said.

"Having the championship at home was great. A lot of people were into it. The gym was crowded, no empty seats."

Gomes played the best basketball of his life and was voted MVP of the event.

Last summer, when Angola captured their latest African title, he was voted MVP for the second time in a row.

He had 16 points and 16 rebounds as Angola beat the Ivory Coast 82-72 in the Final.

That performance qualified the team for the FIBA World Championship in Turkey where they will play in a very interesting Group A in the Preliminary Round.

They will go up against Argentina, Serbia, Australia, Germany and Jordan.

Gomes warned: “We're coming to compete. When you compete, you try to win.'"

I love Joaquim Gomes. I thought he had a great chance to be in the NBA. He never really tried to get on some big European teams, although he played Köln in Germany, I think.

Anyhow, I think he's right. It's about time that Angola started to compete with some of the other NTs at a higher level.
"I really like the attitudes of eagles. They never give up. When they grab a fish or something else, they never let it go. It doesn't matter. In a book, they write they find a skeleton of [an] eagle and there is no fish. It means that the fish beat him and killed him, but he didn't let go." -- Donatas Motiejunas

ANG – Joakim Gomes: “Games against Australia, Jordan decisive”
    25/06/2010.

Luanda (FIBA World Championship) – Angolan national team’s center, Joakim Gomes, mentioned that the games against Australia and Jordan in FIBA World Championship to be played in Turkey as decisive for the squad, as the two teams are much at the level of Angola. Speaking to Angop after learning about his being summoned for the competition set for August 28-September 12, Gomes said Angola must win the two games in order to secure the qualification for the next round.

He underlined that the two mentioned teams are within the reach of the African champions (Angola), adding that the only thought is to win.

Commenting on the fact that Jordan is being coached by former Angola national team coach, Mário Palma, who knows well the Angolan basketball, he said this can have an influence on both sides.

“Mário Palma knows us well, but we also know him well. This factor alone gives us motivation, and maybe to him as well as a coach”, he said.

He considered Argentina as one of the main title candidates, while Serbia and Germany are very tough opponents that have made much progress of late.

Angola is drawn in group A alongside Argentina, Germany, Australia and Serbia.
