    Smile china looking for gold

i hope this is the year not only 4 china but 4 asia as well to win a gold in this coming olympiad.....
this squad dominates the asia in terms of bsktball not only their sizes but their style of playing since 80's...w/ the likes of yao,yi,chen and mo ke...
but this team needs 2 develop their slashing skills I agree that they are 3 pt shooting team however shooting is not enough to win a ball game
    good luck 4 CHINA
mabuhay also to you and to the PHILPPINES

Surprises may happen, but to my mind they don't have a chance to do that! Actually (of course no offense) I doubt that any asian team can reach even semifinals.

China has only 1 or 2 players in the team. A gold medal team needs at least 5 to 7 that can dominate at anytime.

Sorry China you dont have that...

It should be every team's goal to win gold. On the other hand realistically China is not on par with the top teams. The aim is somewhere around 6th place, although 8th seems acceptable.

But surprises can happen. Not too many picked Russia to win Eurobasket, right?

Being host usually helps but it would be a BIG surprise if China even reach SF.

nope, it's called dreaming with eyes wide open and smell reeking of alcohol

I wouldn't be surprised if in the near future, China will be one of the world's best in basketball but NOW is not their time yet

    Exclamation

China has a 50% chance of making the quarterfinals - and that's about it.

For me, they have to make sure they beat Angola, which is not quite done, but shall be, and then to try to beat Germany. I think other teams are over, and Sofo could break Yao anyway, he is too strong(fat?), and Yao too tall to impede him taking position.
Well, Spain and USA, let me laugh... China will never get them this year.

ps sinobball: I think most Euro teams are at the same level, each of them knows each other perfectly as the guys play together, etc... And so, it's much more likely that one team unwaited will win a major competition than in an international tournament. For the moment, I don't think China is better than the thenth European team.

Who is the thenth European team if most Euro teams are at the same level?
I remember the record of the match China vs European team is loss to Italy(2times), Spain, Greece, Lithuania, and win Serbia, Slovenia in the recent years.
Only 1 loss to Italy in 2006 WC is considered a bad game, in which tournament Italy is kind of 6,7th European team. And In that match we play a very bad game.
The others is Itay(1st European team in that tournament), Lithuania(2nd),Spain(3rd),Greece(2nd)
Do you forget Lebanon who have never won China beat France?

As others mentioned, China would have to throw Germany out to make it as 4th (3 first places seem already taken). That means, they would have to face the first of the other group to advance to the SF. China - Argentina, China - Russia, China - Lithuania ( - Croatia??). In any case, they don't stand a chance against these teams..

I'd predict, at the very best, 7th place.

Never say never. I agree that the chance China will finish better than 7th is very remote, but remember New Zealand finish 4th in 2002 (barely 4th in group and knocked out PR in quarterfinals). I doubt you predicted that.

Wow, knocking PR out, that's surely something....

Honestly, with all due respect (note that our favourite lith coach commands them), it's only fools hope. Germany on a good day - maybe, but thinking of knocking out Lithuania/Argentina in 1/4 finals is above mad.

Let me refresh your memory, that Puerto Rico NT in 2002 beat Yugoslavia and Spain in that tournament, so the only bad game, was versus New Zeland and we lose a opportunity to win a medal.

To beat China you have to pressure their guards in order to not feed Yao.If you fail to do this then the result may be like that against Slovenia in WC´06.If they meet a team like Lithuania who cant pressure that much and with the homecrowd support i give them a 50% chance to beat them!

    Another funny topic.

Who was the Chinese guy telling me in IRC "Greek boy, Great China will stamp on Greece like cockroach" in the last WC? ...China was up by 10-12 points.." You see Greek boy, I told you Great China too powerful for Greece"...once Greece started turning the screw and China could barely pass the halfway line being held under seige in their own "paint"...he logged out

Yes, China has beaten Greece. In 1986 in the WC in Spain 112-111 for the 9th spot.

At this point in the development of international basketball, nothing would really surprise me. Do I think China will get a medal? No, probably not. But, like New Zealand, China might find a bull like Pero Cameron who demolishes the tournament. Nobody predicted Argentina or Serbia or Spain or Russia in their respective wins in the past few years. Look, China is not a bad team at all. They have the best center on the planet and some NBA-quality talent. Their National Team is here to stay, and they're only going to get better.

In a book, they write they find a skeleton of [an] eagle and there is no fish. It means that the fish beat him and killed him, but he didn't let go." -- Donatas Motiejunas
