December 11, a Sunday, is the last regular playdate of the elimination round of the 2011-12 PBA Philippine Cup. The very final game of the elims pits Barangay Ginebra against defending champion Talk ‘N Text in the 6:30 p.m. second game at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

It will already be the second meeting in the elims between the two teams, a rematch of their coming November 6 meeting.

The date is a special one for the Ginebra franchise, but one that I’m sure that most fans aren’t familiar with.

25 years ago, Ginebra won its first PBA title in the Open Conference, the third tournament of the season. The team came from behind to beat Manila Beer, 130-120, in the fifth game of a best-of-seven title series to end what had been an 8-year title drought for the franchise.

Think Sonny Jaworski, Dondon Ampalayo, the Loyzaga brothers — Chito and Joey, Dante Gonzalgo, Leo Isaac. All demigods in Ginebra lore, were part of that team.

Think two legendary imports playing on one team– Billy Ray Bates and Michael Hackett.

I reckon that the enduring popularity of Ginebra was cemented right then and there right then and there.

The team battled back from an 18-point deficit in that game to clinch the championship. Think “Never Say Die,” and it happened that night, magnified a thousand-fold because it resulted in the team’s first championship. It’s a spirit that the team carries with it to this day.

Now, think about this: Wouldn’t it be nice if Ginebra paid tribute to that title-winning team a quarter of a century ago? The current crop of Gin Kings, for example, could suit up in retro jerseys featuring the 1986 uniform design — it’ll be up to them if they want the shorts to be as skimpy as the ones worn back then. I suppose most fans would love it — especially the females.

Ginebra management can go one step further and host a reunion for the players of the franchise’s first champion team.

With more than a month to go, there should be ample time to invite the Big J, as well as Billy Ray Bates, who is in town. There should also be no problems inviting players who are still in the country, which include Ampalayo, Isaac, Chito Loyzaga, Gonzalgo, Romy Mamaril, Joey Marquez (yes, THAT Joey Marquez), Mukesh Advani, Rey Perez, and Terry Saldana.

If Ginebra officials really want to go all-out, they could even invite Francis Arnaiz, Joey Loyzaga, Hackett, and assistant coach Rino Salazar to fly back to the country.

I have no idea where the likes of Rolando Buhay and Ed Ducut are right now, but I am sure the PBA knows where to get in touch with them.

Perhaps the PBA could also consider selling replicas of those retro jerseys, and donate a portion or all of the proceeds for a cause — like for Billy Mamaril’s wife, Christine, who’s still in a coma. I know I would buy a jersey, or even two.

Filipinos love to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. So why not make an occasion of the silver anniversary of Ginebra’s first title?

That would make for an early Christmas gift for the millions of members of Barangay Ginebra.

Compare that to other teams? Ill answer you the Center. EVill is a shadow of the Old Raging Bull, Mamaril is in the injured list because of his wife, when he's on the team all he do is commit foul. Eric Menk is washed up but who knows he might come back in the playoffs. Yancy De Ocampo is soft. Willy Wilson is an undersized PF, Reil Cervantes well is a rookie. Is there a dominant big man there?

SMC never prioritize our team like Coach Siot has said last Wed on post-game "We still rely on Mark and JJ, when I first coach in 04 them we rely on them, other teams have diff stars now."

    04 Stars- 011 Stars

    TNT- Taulava/Alapag- Alapag/Castro
    Meralco(SLR)- Duremdes- Cardona
    Coke(Pow)- Hatfield(?)- Gary D
    PF- Alvin P.(?)- James Yap
    SMB- Danny S/Danny I- Jwash/Arwind
    Shopinas(Red Bull) Harp(?)- Ren Ren
Barako Bull (Air)- Vergel Meneses(?)- Willie Miller
    Alaska- Arigo(?)- LA
Shell(ROS)- Tony Dlc(?)- Paul Lee/Gabe Norwood
    BGK- Big 3- Big 3

As you can see TNT only retained there stars from 04 with Alapag. But rest are all different.

2004? Patrimonio's final season. Meanwhile, Raymundo was the top player and James Yap was a rookie then but you know that he'd be a superstar soon.

@itsm3jonsarap let me put it this way po- Ginebra coaches do not want ORDINARY FREE AGENTS. They want MARQUEE players. That's not easy.

and compare their bigs against other teams bigs:

Alaska: Sonny Thoss, JayR Reyes, Hans Thiele, Paolo Bugia, Ariel Mepana, Sam Eman, Ervin Sotto

Barako Bull: Dorian Pena, Don Allado, Jondan Salvador, Mick Pennisi, Ken Acibar

BMEG: Rafi Reavis, Kerby Raymundo, Rico Maierhofer, Marc Pingris, Joe Devance, John Ferriols, Jerwin Gaco

Meralco: Asi Taulava, Gabby Espinas, Mark Isip, Reynel Hugnatan, Jason Ballesteros, Brian Faundo, Gilbert Bulawan

Petron: Danny Ildefonso, Jay Washington, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Rob Reyes, Noy Baclao, Carlo Sharma

Powerade: Doug Kramer, Ricky Calimag, Romel Adducul, Alex Crisano, William Antonio

Rain Or Shine: Beau Belga, JR Quinahan, Jervy Cruz, Larry Rodriguez, Ronni Matias

Shopinas: Brian Ilad, Magi Sison, Homer Se, Mark Canlas, Elmer Espiritu, Dennis Daa

Talk and Text: Ali Peek, Kelly Williams, Ranidel De Ocampo, Japeth Aguilar, Harvey Carey, Gilber Lao

From Above List: I will rate them Ahead of Powerade, Rain Or Shine, Meralco and Shopinas when it comes to bigs.

IDK what happened to E-Vill but when he don the SMC franchise jersey his game deteriorated. (nawala ang angas)

^Why would they want ordinary free agents when they can have marquee player, I wonder what did Bmeg gave for Joe DeVance(who was supposed to be traded to BGK but Bmeg snagged him)

I would only rate our frontline ahead Powerade and ROS. Meralco have Asi, Hugnatan, Isip, Espinas and Ballesteros(who's not playing good but he's a Smart Gilas alumni )

ROS have sweet shooting big men. Beau Belga when playing good is better than any BGK big man and if you have watched last ROS/Meralco game even JR Quinahan is making three point shot. LRod and Mattias are decent. Jervy Cruz just need some confidence.

^ that's the problem. How can they get a marquee player if they are now willing to part ways with one of their stars?

Just want to share an article on the birth of Barangay Ginebra. I hope this will come in fruition.

    On-topic.

Yeah I think BGk needs to overhaul. But I still highly doubt that they'll give their Old-big-three just to have a new marquee player unless they'll trade E-Vill-Tubid-Intal-Canaleta to a team willing to give up their own marquee players.

But we can never can tell. Look at what just happened to SMB/Petron as they traded three IMPORTANT players (Seigle-Pena-DH) just to get serviceable rooks.

Fidel Mangonon's article came out a bit earlier than expected but it's all for good. If Barangay Ginebra does intend to commemorate the franchise's first championship, then December 11, 2011 would be the perfect day for them to relive the initial glory of the team under then Coach Robert Jaworski.

I'm a little disappointed though with how the story line was written. I felt Mangonon, considered as the league's resident historian and statistician, would have given better justice to this scintillating Ginebra feat of 1986 rather than merely focusing on the last game per se. Many fans, Ginebra followers or otherwise, would have been enamored more if Mangonon focused on the developments that led to this championship. For one, in Game 1, Billy Ray Bates scored a buzzer-beating slam dunk that broke the deadlock and catapulted Ginebra to an impressive come-from-behind two point win, 135-133. Try to recall all buzzer-beaters in PBA history and I'm sure there were a lot - practically everything was impressive. But what made this shot more spectacular, in my opinion, was the value of the game (Game 1 of the Finals) and how it was done (Bates' vicious slam, thereby posterizing Abet Guidaben, with no time remaining). I've always felt that this may be hallmarked as one of Billy Ray's greatest games in his entire career (NBA, PBA or otherwise) and I'm appalled that Mangonon didn't make mention of this.

Another impressive feat in this series was Robert Jaworski's record-breaking 58 minutes played in Game 4 of this series. With Ginebra up, 2-1 in the series, Jaworski decided to play the entire game that went beyond regulation and decided only after 2 overtime periods. Ginebra won this game, 145-135. At 40 years old to play 58 minutes of professional basketball, you can only describe this as phenomenal.

More than anything, Mangonon's focus on the birth of the Ginebra never-say-die spirit didn't actually measure up. He forgot to mention that in Games 1 and 2, Ginebra had to come back from huge deficits of 15 and 19 points at the end of the 3rd quarter in a similar scenario from what happened in the final game. Ginebra won Game 1 (from the Bates' slam) but lost in Game 2, 121-111 after the Brewmasters was able to ride the vaunted Ginebra onslaught.

Had Mangonon opted to use the entire series as the basis for Ginebra's trademark of "never-say-die," fans would have realized what kind of spirit Robert Jaworski brought to the team when he was coaching the franchise. Instead, he opted for only the final game, where, while it wasn't bad, didn't give the true picture of how remarkable the feat was 25 years ago. Similarly, while Mangonon may have also inferred that this championship was the birth of the never-say-die spirit of the team, I would cite the 1985 game against NCC when Jaworski came back from the hospital to have his lips stitched up as arguably the real birth of the said never-say-die spirit.

Nonetheless, Mangonon's emphasis with this article is to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Ginebra's title. And what better way to do so by having the present Ginebra team wear retro jerseys of the 1986 team - something that should be looked forward to by all PBA fans. For this, we hope the BGK management would grant this wish not just for the fans' sake but for giving historical value to the team's accomplishments.

Thank you for posting your thoughts, Jay. But I think the proposed Ginebra Tribute will not push through. The idea didn't appeal to the PBA or to the SMC group.

    John Wilson is 6''2
and we f--king need a big man... and a better coach.

I agree with MC47. It's not like his performance dipped he still can carry the team but an immediate need for a big man is really a must. But MC47 is the runner up for MVP(and arguably should have win if they won the 2nd conf), so playing 12 minutes(against Meralco scoring 10) and 19 minutes(scoring 14???).

    Maybe MC47 as playing coach

Let's face it my fave team is in turmoil
