Parks Son To Try Out For National Olympic Pool

    Updated December 04, 2008 12:00 AM

Bobby Parks, a seven-time PBA Best Import awardee, is bringing his Fil-Am son Ray to try out for the national developmental pool gearing up for the 2012 London Olympics.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala yesterday told The STAR the Parks will be coming in from Memphis on Dec. 27 with the son trying his luck with the national squad.

Parks, 15, is currently a US NCAA Division I prospect, having averaged an impressive 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Ridgeway Middle School varsity back home in Memphis.

Parks, whose mother Marifer Celine (Shane) Barbosa is a Filipina now living in Los Angeles, was also the youngest player invited to play in the three-day, 17-and-under Las Vegas Easter Classic last year and stood out in the tournament with his impressive performance.

Parks earlier stated he wants to play for Memphis State, where his father also played, but if things work out might end up wearing the Ateneo Eagles uniform under coach Norman Black.

“It would be nice to play in the Philippines,” Ray told The STAR last year. “I definitely want to go to college either in the US or the Philippines. I don’t know what to do yet. It would be an honor to someday play for the Philippine team. My dad would love to see me play for the national team.”

Eala said Parks should be a big addition to the 25-player development pool the SBP earlier formed under team project director Serbian Rajko Toroman in the country’s bid to earn a berth in the 2012 London Olympics. – Joey Villar
Here is the Philstar article about Ray Parks, specifically the third paragraph.

Yes, Ray said the above statement last year .... but do note that was before he caught the eyes of US Division I College Scouts.

What is sure is that to him and to his dad, it would be an honor to someday play for the Philippine team.

This must be an error, Ray Parks is 100% in high school, he is a Sophomore, so he is an underclassmen. He is playing against Juniors and Seniors who could be up to 2-3 years older.

if he indeed will be included in our 09 sea games, it will also help his skills to develop, since he will be up against older players.

Wang Zhi Zhi played for the Chinese Youth team in 1994 here in Manila along with Li Nan. After that stint, Wang was elevated to their seniors team. Wang was the youngest then as a teenager. Wang was also a part of the 1996 Chinese Olympic team as a back-up.

That is the principle the SBP is putting up on Parks which is similar to Wang and Yao. Start them young. And I think Ray Parks is playing way beyond is age.

I recall the starters then were Ogie Gumatay, Ralph Rivera, Bryan Gahol, Allen Patrimonio and Rommel Adducul.

The back-up was either Angelo Velasco or Paolo Mendoza then.

Perhaps. Maybe Emperador Brandy must have messed up your memory.

Going back to the topic, I hope Japeth recovers fast from his injury. I recall this time last year that Solar began broadcasting Western Kentucky's NCAA games.

Hehe, there are so many people with "Filipino" sounding names, it's almost impossible to tell just from the name hehe. But I know in texas there are alot of tall, Hybrid Fil-ams, as in less than 1/2 Filipino blood. Lots of ball players, but most of them don't have filipino passports. So what exactly is Ray Parks' plan, graduate high school then continue at Ateneo? If so, then that will be in 2 years time.
