Bobby Parks, a seven-time PBA Best Import awardee, is bringing his Fil-Am son Ray to try out for the national developmental pool gearing up for the 2012 London Olympics.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala yesterday told The STAR the Parks will be coming in from Memphis on Dec. 27 with the son trying his luck with the national squad.
Parks, 15, is currently a US NCAA Division I prospect, having averaged an impressive 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Ridgeway Middle School varsity back home in Memphis.
Parks, whose mother Marifer Celine (Shane) Barbosa is a Filipina now living in Los Angeles, was also the youngest player invited to play in the three-day, 17-and-under Las Vegas Easter Classic last year and stood out in the tournament with his impressive performance.
Parks earlier stated he wants to play for Memphis State, where his father also played, but if things work out might end up wearing the Ateneo Eagles uniform under coach Norman Black.
“It would be nice to play in the Philippines,” Ray told The STAR last year. “I definitely want to go to college either in the US or the Philippines. I don’t know what to do yet. It would be an honor to someday play for the Philippine team. My dad would love to see me play for the national team.”
Eala said Parks should be a big addition to the 25-player development pool the SBP earlier formed under team project director Serbian Rajko Toroman in the country’s bid to earn a berth in the 2012 London Olympics. – Joey Villar
