HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Tirrell Baines scored 18 points to help Marshall snap a five-game losing streak with a 100-49 victory over East Carolina at the Henderson Center Saturday. Baines was one of four Marshall players in double figures.
Tyler Wilkerson netted 17 points, while Chris Lutz and Hassan Whiteside each added 15 point for the Thundering Herd (16-5-4 Conference USA).
The win also ended a four-game Conference USA road losing streak for the Herd, while the Pirates (7-16, 1-8) suffered their third straight defeat.
Darrius Morrow and Brock Young each scored 11 points to lead East Carolina, who made twice as many free throws (24) as field goals (12) on the evening Young's layup gave the Pirates an 8-7 lead with 14:05 remaining in the half. However it proved to be their final field goal of the half until Erin Straughn's 3-pointer beat the halftime buzzer. In the final 14 minutes of the first half, ECU missed 10 shots and committed 11 turnovers as Marshall pushed out to a 33-21 halftime lead.
The Pirates made just four first half field goals, while they committed 13 turnovers which translated into 14 Marshall points. ECU scored 10 of its final 13 point of the half from the free throw line and went 12-of-14 from the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes.
Following Young's bucket, the Herd scored 10 unanswered points to seize a 10-point lead, 18-8, with 7:57 left. The Pirates pulled within eight on Chad Wynn's free throw, 22-14. Wilkerson then scored five points to help Marshall extend its lead back to double figures.
The Herd committed just three turnovers in the first half and shot 42.9 from the floor compared to just 23.5 percent by the Pirates.
Marshall wasted little time padding its lead after halftime. Lutz made a pair of 3s before Whiteside scored nine consecutive points for a 20-point lead, 50-30, less than four minutes into the half.
The Herd made 16 of their first 23 shots after halftime to nearly double up the Pirates, 73-36, with fewer than nine minutes to play. Marshall made 26-of-40 field goal attempts in the second half (65 percent) and finished the game shooting 55.9 percent.
East Carolina shot a 25.0 percent (12-48) from the floor and suffered its worst loss in Conference USA play since losing by 51 at 14th-ranked Louisville in 2005.
The Pirates return to the hardwood on Wednesday, Feb. 10, against Tulane. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

Dior Lowhorn Scores 26, Michael Williams Adds 20 as Dons Sweep Toreros
Feb. 4, 2010
Final Stats
(San Diego) - Freshman guard Michael Williams converted on a 4-point play to lead the Dons to a thrilling 72-70 overtime triumph against San Diego Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Dons (9-14, 4-4 WCC) collect their second consecutive overtime win after defeating No. 13/8 Gonzaga Saturday and complete the season sweep against the Toreros (9-15, 2-6 WCC).
Senior All-American Dior Lowhorn scored 26 points on 11-of-18 from the field to go along with six rebounds. Williams turned in the finest game of his young career with 20 and went 5-of-6 from 3-point range. Sophomore guard Kwame Vaughn chipped in 11 points.
After a slow start, San Francisco shot .491 (26-53) from the floor, including .429 (9-21) from deep. The Dons held the Toreros to .381 (8-21) from the field in the second half, but USD hit at a .490 (25-51) rate for the game, .429 (9-21) from 3-point range. Both teams collected 30 rebounds and after coughing up 10 turnovers in the first half, the Dons committed just four miscues after intermission.
After trailing by as many nine points in the second half, USF built a seven point edge, 58-51 with 4:31 left in regulation on a 3-pointer by Williams. The Dons would not score again as the Toreros forced overtime on a 7-0 run.
Once in the extra session, San Diego built a 4-point lead, 69-65 with 0:28 remaining, setting the stage for more heroics from Williams. The freshman drilled a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left and then off a missed free throw and a mad drive up the court converted a 4-point play to lift San Francisco to another thrilling win.
"It was one of those games where I didn't think we played our best, but we found a way to get it done," USF head coach Rex Walters said. "I'm proud of the way the team stayed together. It was not easy."
San Francisco got off to an agonizingly slow start and trailed 16-4 at the 14:13 mark. The Dons pulled to within four, 20-16 on a Williams 3-pointer with 8:55 left, but USD rebuilt a 11-point lead, 28-17 courtesy of an 8-1 run. Lowhorn led the way for the Dons with 13 points, while Williams added eight.
USF shot .455 (10-22) from the floor, but did a poor job taking care of the basketball and committed 10 turnovers. The Toreros hit at a .542 (13-24) clip before intermission and went .545 (6-11) from long distance. Senior guard Brandon Johnson was a one-man wrecking crew scoring 14 points with four 3-pointers for San Diego.
USF returns to action Saturday, February 6 when it travels across the Bay Bridge to take on longtime Bay Area rival Saint Mary's. Game time against the Gaels is set for 8:00 PM and will be carried live on the flagship station of Dons Basketball Green 960 and televised on Comcast SportsNet California.

Bronco defense holds
Men’s basketball team extends win streak to five
Cal Poly’s men’s basketball team played three games against Cal State San Bernardino, Chico State, and Cal State Stanislaus last week and won them all 63-59, 69-61, and 65-32, respectively. The Broncos have won seven straight.
The last time a team scored fewer than 32 points against the Broncos was 31 years ago when the Broncos topped Cal State Bakersfield 30-26 in the 1978-79 season.
Most importantly, though, the Broncos clinched a CCAA Tournament berth in the midst of improving their record to 12-4 in conference play and their overall record to 14-5. They are third place in the CCAA Conference behind Humboldt State and Cal State San Bernardino, which both have a conference record of 13-3, and an overall record of 16-5.
In Saturday’s game against Stanislaus State, the Broncos never trailed, and at one point, went on a 15-0 run.
Going into the half, the Broncos led by seven points. But in the second half, the Broncos made three times as many points as their opponent, scoring 39 points and holding the Warriors to 13, a season-defensive best.
The Broncos’ victory was a team effort in which every player who played scored. Leading the team offensively were junior guard Mark Rutledge, who scored 13 points and made seven rebounds, and sophomore center Dwayne Fells, who racked up 12 points, five rebounds, and two assists.
The Broncos finished the game shooting 51.0 percent from the floor and not only finished with their team’s largest win, but also with the largest win for any team in the 2009-10 season.
Saturday’s game was preceded by the aforementioned Tuesday night thriller against Cal State San Bernardino.
“Almost everyone stepped it up,” said head coach Greg Kamansky. “Basically a good team effort.”
Tuesday’s victory was significant because during their road trip, the Broncos played and won all five games, a first in the team’s 62-year history.
Junior forward Donnelle Booker led the team with 13 points, while collecting four rebounds and two assists.
Sophomore guard Matthew Rosser was one of three other players who scored in double-digits, leading the team in free throws, making seven of eight, on his way to matching his season-high of 11 points.
The Broncos led by as many as seven points in the first half. However, the Coyotes overcame that deficit and led by seven points with 13 minutes to play in regulation.
Over the next 12 minutes, the Broncos chipped away at the Coyotes’ lead, and retook it with 1:20 left to play.
With three seconds remaining, the Broncos held onto a slim two-point lead, but Rosser sealed the Broncos’ victory by draining both of his free throws.
While this game was a nail-biter, coach Kamansky said, “We played a lot more physical.”
Coach Kamansky also said the Coyotes are a team that scores several of its points off of turnovers, and the fact that they did not have a lot of them was a key component in the Broncos’ win.
Despite winning five straight, coach Kamansky said that in the first seven minutes of the second half, the Broncos only scored two points.
“We need to maintain our offense,” said Kamansky. “We just need to get a little solid on offense.”
The five-game winning streak is a remarkable feat, and Kamansky said, “Just the reality of losing three straight games at home” is the key ingredient that has been present during the streak.
“We had to learn to play physical, and not let that be an excuse,” said Kamansky. “Once that started happening, we started rebounding.”
Friday night’s game against Chico State marked the beginning of a two-game home stand for the Broncos.
For the Broncos, it was a team effort, as every player scored at least five points. Leading the team were freshman guard Mitchel Anderson, who matched his career-high with 14 points off the bench, and senior guard Austin Swift, who scored 10.
Last month, the teams played each other in a game that was decided in overtime, and saw the Wildcats eek out a 72-70 win.
Despite the Broncos finishing with a commanding eight-point lead, the Wildcats went on a 15-6 run in the second half that brought them to within one point of the Broncos on two occasions. However, the Broncos took advantage of the Wildcats’ turnovers and made crucial defensive plays to maintain their lead, and ended the game shooting a season-high 57.7 percent from the floor.
This week, the Broncos begin a four-game road trip and will take on division-leading Humboldt State on Thursday and 8-13 Sonoma State on Saturday.

HUNTINGTON — Everything went according to plan.
University of Rio Grande put up a fight before the Marshall Thundering Herd’s superior depth took over.
Marshall was able to rest injured forward Tyler Wilkerson.
And, the Marshall men’s basketball team picked up another victory while assuring itself of a winning season.
Marshall (17-7) surpassed 100 points for the fifth time this season Tuesday night against the Rio Grande RedStorm and romped to a 115-73 victory over its NAIA opponent before a Cam Henderson Center crowd of 4,179 spectators.
“It was good for our guys to be able to crank it up,” Marshall coach Donnie Jones said. “Now, we get ready for UAB.”
The Herd’s next game is a Conference USA rematch Saturday at UAB (19-4). The Blazers took two-point win Jan. 23 at Marshall. UAB is tied for second place in the conference at 7-2. Marshall is fifth at 5-4.
Rio Grande was a stopover during a one-week break from conference play.
“In the back of our heads we want to get ready for UAB, but coach keeps us focused on one game at a time,” Herd guard Chris Lutz said.
Marshall had seven double-figure scorers led by sophomore Dago Pena with a career high 18. Lutz and Tirrell Baines both scored 16 and Hassan Whiteside tossed in 15. Antonio Haymon scored 13, Damier Pitts 11 and Shaq Johnson 10.
Baines completed a double-double with 11 rebounds. Whiteside had nine rebounds and five blocked shots.
Wilkerson, a senior forward averaging 13.2 points and 6.7 rebounds, was in uniform, but didn’t play.
Rio Grande reduced an early 14-point deficit to 26-22 midway through the first half before Marshall spurted to a 53-39 halftime edge.
The Herd’s advantage hit 20 points early in the second period and continued growing.
P.J. Rase, a senior guard for the RedStorm who played at Chesapeake High School, made four 3-point shots and had 18 points.
The game counted as an exhibition for Rio Grande, which is 5-19 for the season.

Melrose collapses in fourth quarter in loss to East
By David Boyd on February 9, 2010 10:26 PM
A week ago Melrose was 21-1, ranked No. 15 in USA Today, and was blowing out White Station (68-54) in the fourth quarter. Then, the Golden Wildcats started missing free throws, the Spartans' Joe Jackson went "Kobe" on them and Melrose lost 80-78.
Three nights later, Central defeated Melrose for the second time this season, 80-75.
Tonight, Melrose led 55-43 entering the fourth quarter of its home game with East. The Mustangs outscored Melrose 15-2 in the fourth quarter to hand Melrose a 58-57 loss.
Melrose is out of the running for next week's city championship, but can they turn it around before district tournament play begins?

hope so he is not the need to be after college type of guy but he is a consistent double digit scorer in college like Jared Dillinger i just hate some guys placing him above the other mainstays in gilas this EARLY but sorry there is only 2 halves in an ncaa game and admit it is an inferior competition
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University men's basketball team had seven players score in double figures, led by a career-high 18 points from Dago Pena to defeat NAIA Division I Rio Grande, 115-73 Feb. 9 inside the Cam Henderson Center. Pena made 7-of-13 shots and grabbed six rebounds as the Herd upped its record to 17-7 on the season. Chris Lutz and Tirrell Baines each poured in 16 points apiece. Lutz made 6-of-7 attempts from the field, along with a perfect 4-for-4 on 3-pointers, while Baines tallied a double-double with 11 rebounds.
Hassan Whiteside (15), Antonio Haymon (13), Damier Pitts (11) and Shaquille Johnson (10) rounded out the double-digit point scorers. Whiteside added nine rebounds and five blocks, with Pitts dishing out nine assists. Leading 11-8 at the 15:30 mark in the opening half, MU embarked on an 11-0 spurt including a pair of baskets from Pena to extend the early advantage to double digits at 12:49. The Red Storm continued to hang around, utilizing a 13-4 rally, which included three-straight buckets to get within in six, 28-22, with 9:55 left. The Herd would answer back after a Whiteside slam dunk from Damier Pitts highlighted an 8-0 run to put MU up, 34-22. Rio Grande charged back to only trail by five points, 38-33, thanks to a 9-2 scoring rally, which included a trio of 3-pointers, two from Doug Campbell. Chris Lutz scored eight of the Herd's final 10 points of the first half, to put MU up 53-39 heading into the locker room.
"After intermission" means "after halftime". Lutz scored two three-pointers to help Marshall pull away. By the 17:47 mark of the second half (which is equivalent to 7:47 in the third quarter, by the way), Lutz already had ten points, a steal, and a couple of assists. Marshall was up 26-43. It wasn't "garbage time".

GMU made the NCAA tournament in 1989, 1999, 2001, 2006 (the Final Four game), and 2008, and the NIT in 1986, 2002, 2004, and 2009. Marshall has not been in the Big Dance since 1987, and has been 0-5 in NCAA tournament games. Oakland made it to the tournament in 1994-1997 (four times), then had a drought that was snapped only in 2005.
It's clear which program has had more success in recent years.
