L'Hospitalet Junior Tournament

Lietuvos Rytas of Lithuania became the 13th club to win the renowned Torneig Junior Ciutat de L'Hospitalet in its 30th anniversary edition by cruising past Unicaja of Spain by 70-87 in the final. Augustas Peciukevicius scored 8 points of his 14 points in a decisive 3-20 fourth-quarter run, while Mantas Kadzevicius led L. Rytas with 17 points, 9 rebounds. Unicaja lost its third final since 2001 after having won the 1997 and 1998 titles. By reaching the L'Hospitalet final, both teams qualified for the Nike International Junior Tournament at the 2009 Final Four in Berlin. They'll join previous qualifiers Kalise Gran Canaria, Montepaschi Siena and defending champs FMP. Nikola Mirotic of Real Madrid was named MVP despite his team finishing eighth.

A 30th anniversary presentation for the Torneig Junior Ciutat de L’Hospitalet, the second of three NIKE International Junior Classification Tournaments to be held this season, was held on Friday in the town outside Barcelona that gives the tournament its name. The holiday edition of the L'Hospitalet tournament, as its know far and wide in basketball circles, will be held from Sunday, January 4 to Tuesday, January 6 and will draw 12 teams, half of them from outside Spain. The teams will feature players born in 1991 and 1992, and the tournament finalists will win a place at the NIJT tournament series final in Berlin, Germany at the 2009 Final Four in May. Euroleague Basketball will mark its second year of collaboration with the Torneig Junior Ciutat de L’Hospitalet with full coverage in a special section of Euroleague.net updated as the tournament progresses. The first of the classification tournament series will be held in Rome, Italy from December 27 to 29, and the third in Belgrade, Serbia from February 13 to 15.

newly formed ... Marciulionis BS already has a long history and it is a shame for Rytas that they didn't send such youngsters as Gecevicius or Pocius to EL tournament before.

Marciulionis BS has very good 1991 generation, they were the first team that won the junior Lithuanian BS championship being one year younger and now they are doing really good job in NKL for their age. And IMHO... adding Valanciunas to that team makes them favorite in Berlin.

Joventut was third after overcoming Cajasol Sevilla 84 to 75.
