i dont think thailand backed out because of our team. there are two slots available. it could be that they have scouted indonesia or singapore and thought these teams have improved a lot. i think we should scout these teams too

If it is true that thailand and other SEA nations pulled out of the tournament, maybe they realized basketball does not matter for the country & their people Who cares about basketball if they have no chance of winning.

can't SEABA just give the RP a bye? i think it's rather pointless having one team just romp the competition with just two spots to play for. this qualifier is a warm up for them.

    remember 2007?

    122-55 (Singapore)
    85-48 (Indonesia)
    102-72 (Malaysia)
    96-76 (Thailand)

They need a second placer. That's how it goes. Even The redeem team fought for the Fiba Americas even though everyone knows they are gonna romp everyone.

You guys should be fine... did the other teams in the IBL loan their top players?... back in 1994 Asian Games, the Philippines sent the PBA All-Filipino Cup champion, San Miguel Beermen with some reinforcement of top players from the other teams... of course, the core of the team still that of San Miguel but the top players from the other team helps the team a lot in that tourney... you guys can do the same thing... if not SEABA maybe in FIBA Asia Championship...

Ah ok... I think the best way for you guys to gain entry to the Asian Championship is to focus in beating Malaysia and Singapore... aim for second place... I got a feeling the format might be based on points and winning record with no play-offs again... since theres only 4 teams...

Thailand, Laos out of SEABA caging

A piece of good news somehow eased coach Yeng Guiao of the burden brought about by a piece of bad news he received earlier.

Shortly after the PSA Forum wrapped up its weekly session at the Shakey's U.N. Avenue branch, Guiao was informed by RP team liason Renato Chavez of Thailand's sudden withdrawal in the coming South East Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) men's cage championship.

Although expected to romp off with the opposition in the June 6-10 meet in Medan, Indonesia, the absence of the Thais meant one less concern for the Powerade Team Pilipinas team.

Helterbrand suffered a pulled hamstring during Ginebra's playoff game against Rain or Shine Sunday for the second outright semifinals berth of the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup.

Although Guiao considered it as a 'minor injury', it also meant Helterbrand would be out of action for the next 10 days as doctors advised him to stay away from practice.

"It's bad news for us, although Willie (Miller) and Ryan (Reyes) are still there to take care of our backcourt," said Guiao.

"We just learned about it yesterday shortly after JayJay have undergone an MRI test."

But with Thailand skipping the SEABA, the load is expected to lessen for the PBA-backed nationals, who now will just have to contend with host Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Laos was the first to back out, a move Guiao describes as 'nahiya yata sa Pilipinas,' in obvious reference to the country's decision not to include basketball in the calendar of events of the Southeast Asian Games it is hosting at year's end.

"It could be the political situation there," said Guiao, providing the answer himself to a question that puzzled a lot of people.

"Pero sayang din. May team naman yung Thailand at tsaka two slots ang available for the FIBA-Asia," Guiao added.

Chavez said the recent development could shorten the meet to only four days.

Helterbrand, now in his second straight tour of duty with the RP squad, had been included by Guiao in the final 12-man list of the RP quintet.

And as per tournament rule, the final line-up can no longer be altered once it had been submitted.

"We would have wanted to insert Sonny Thoss in the lineup when we learned about JayJay's injury, pero kung ano raw 'yung na-submit, basically, that's it," stressed Guiao.

Thoss (knee) and Kelly Williams (blood disorder) are the two players relegated by the RP coaching staff in the reserve list for the SEABA meet owing to health reasons.

Despite getting hurt, Guiao said the 6-foot-1 Helterbrand, the other half of Ginebra's dreaded backcourt he shares with Mark Caguioa, will still travel with the team in Indonesia. The nationals leave for Medan on June 4.

"We'll take him (Helterbrand) to Indonesia and see the situation on a day-to-day basis," Guiao said.

Although highly-favored to top the competition, the RP coach said he's not taking lightly a tournament long been dominated by the Filipinos. Gerry N. Ramos - Journal Online

Aguilar to suit up for Team Pilipinas, says Guiao

As far as Powerade Team Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao is concerned, 6-foot-9 center Japeth Aguilar will suit up for the PBA-backed National squad in two important international competitions this year.

Guiao said he is surprised that there are issues being raised on Aguilar's supposed stint for Powerade Team Pilipinas considering the fact that he will be playing for the national squad.

Aguilar, who plays for the US NCAA Division I Western Kentucky University is also being eyed to reinforce the Smart Gilas National team under Serbian coach Rajko Toroman.

Guiao said that he has talked with Aguilar who earlier planned to come and join the team in their practices.

The son of former PBA player Peter, Aguilar was willing to play in the SEABA but needs to fly back to the US by June 16 in time for the NBA Development League Camp.

Since Guiao believes Team Pilipinas, composed of the PBA's top 12 players can easily win the SEABA crown, he instructed Aguilar to finish his commitment with the NBA development league before joining them.

"Because he is not playing for any PBA team, Japeth will be receiving monthly allowances from our sponsor which is equivalent to a salary of a first round pick. It will amount to something like P100,000 to P150,000 and he will play for three months with us," explained Guiao.

The Jones Cup is set for July 18 to 26 in Chinese Taipei and is a tune-up for the team for the much tougher FIBA-Asia men's championship to be played in Tianjin, China.

The SEABA champion will represent the region in the FIBA-Asia tournament, which is a qualifying meet for the World Championship in Turkey next year.

Aguilar hopes to boost Team Pilipinas' interior strength as he plays alongside with 6-foot-10 Paul Asi Taulava and 6-foot-9 Mick Pennisi. GMANews.TV

Guiao sees SEABA a good buildup for FIBA-Asia

RP team coach Yeng Guiao said they will make good use of the SEABA championship in preparation for the Fiba-Asia world qualifier, vowing to stick with their system and not how to overpower the opposition with their star-studded crew.

"We don't want to beat the opponent just because we're more talented and more athletic. We won't overwhelm them with that advantage. We'll sacrifice winning by 40 or 50 points to run the system for future purposes," said Guiao in his appearance in the weekly PSA Forum at the Shakey's UN Avenue branch yesterday.

"We can overwhelm the opposition but we'll not do that. We can let loose let's say Willie Miller or James Yap, telling them to break down the opposition's defense on their own. Our players can do that, but that's not good for us in the long run," Guiao added.

"You spend at least five to 10 seconds running the system per possession. So don't expect to win really big. The best thing is to put together good preparation and huge winning margins," said Guiao.

The SEABA championship is slated June 6-10 in Medan, Indonesia, but there could be adjustments in the schedule on the reported withdrawal of Thailand and Laos.

And chances are the Powerade Team Pilipinas will be playing with only 11 players with Jayjay Helterbrand suffering a pulled hamstring in the Ginebra-Rain or Shine playoff Wednesday. Nelson Beltran - The Philippine Star

Team Pilipinas to test Malaysians mettle in SEABA opener

MANILA, Philippines – Malaysia gets the first crack against the powerhouse Powerade Team Pilipinas as the two countries open hostilities in the 8th South East Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) men’s championship in Medan, Indonesia next week.

The two teams are set to clash at 5:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. Manila time) in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader on opening day.

The formal opening ceremony precedes the match between the Filipinos and Malaysians, before host Indonesia and Singapore take to the floor in the 8:00 p.m. second game.

SEABA secretary-general Dato Yeoh Choo Hock sent the revised schedule Wednesday following the abrupt withdrawal of Thailand in the June 6 to 9 meet that serves as qualifier to the FIBA-Asia men’s basketball championship in Taijian, China in August.

Before Thailand, Laos was the first to pull out of the tournament, leaving the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia scrambling for the two slots reserved for the region.

The following day (June 7), the PBA-backed nationals under coach Yeng Guiao take on the Indonesians in the 8:00 p.m. main game, shortly after the Singapore-Malaysia opening match.

“Wala kaming pahinga dito," said Guiao of the three straight playing days for the team.

In the absence of Thailand, Guiao pointed to Malaysia as the one team likely to give the Filipinos a good fight.

“Although we’re not also counting out Indonesia because of its advantage as host country. Siyempre, andiyan `yung favorable ang schedule sa kanila, ‘yung comfort ng players nila playing in front of their homecrowd and other intangible factors," added the Filipino coach.

The RP five ends its elimination round campaign against Singapore at 6:00 p.m. on June 8. Indonesia and Malaysia clash in the 8:00 p.m. main game.

The championship game is set the next day (June 9) between the two teams with the best record after the preliminary round. – GMANews.TV

I don't think Thailand will think of participating in a basketball tournament unless they have a strong reinforcement or if they are the host country.

    Remember SEA Games 2007?

*Rescheduling games without the consent of the participating countries and the FIBA officials.

Hey Satria, how's Thoyib Isman doing in the IBL? I understand he's part of the team. He was suppossed to play college ball here 2 years ago for UPHDS but was declared ineligible so we really never got to see him in action.

Do not worry guys indonesia like rp is expected to qualify in fiba asia they can ramp any team in sea by maybe 10 to 20 points maybe 5 notches lower than a pro backed rp but still will rout them therefore they re 12th place team in fiba asia unlike perennial fiba jobbers thailand and indonesia whose hobby is to ease Kuwait Uae or even syria that they will not place 15th or 16th (last) in fiba asia championships

Actually, the sea games 2009 has canceled basketball as one of the sports. Most SEA Countries just use seaba and fiba asia as a preparation for the sea games since they have no chance of winning them.
Wel that shows confidence in your team. How do you propose to get better if you dont at least try to compete? Like the Dream Team. They were way too good, but people wanted to get better and compete rather than sit and be complacent with your position. Look in 1994, Dream Team II. They win by ONLY 15 vs. Spain in their opener. I'd rather try to qualify (and get blownout)for FIBA Asia then win SEA Games. You learn more from losses and you are determined to not let it happen again.
