According to the article DR was up 57-49 after three but played their reserves in the fourth. Garcia and Coronado didn't play, Horford another poor game with 1 point in 20 minutes, Martinez with 14 points in 18 minutes, Orlando Antigua coached the team as Calipari is in the US.

Between Centrobasket and this tournament the DR is playing 9 games in 11 days, is that really a good idea?

Sosa and Ramon were back, Sosa played 7 minutes. Looks like Angola played their starters big minutes and outscored the DR 15-1 over the last 5 minutes.

Still not sure their guards are good enough, but you have to say the DR has had a tremendous pre-tournament run with the win in Puerto Rico and then overcoming a lot of adversity to win in Venezuela tonight. Ronald Ramon hit a three from the corner to give them the lead late in overtime, a three to give them the lead again at the start over overtime, and then when Venezuela decided to foul him he hit all three free throws. Fitting that he closed out the game with a dunk after Torres missed a three. Elpidio Fotuna had a big second half just as in the Centrobasket final.

I'm sure they'd be winning by even more if Villanueva was playing though.

I am just watching a glimpse of a game from centrobasket Josean linked me to.
Dominican team is definately good. The matchup with Russia should be pretty interesting in case they'd take this game too lightly.

Sosa was the only capable PG they had before his first injury. Now its going to be tough to get back again for him, wishing all the best.

Coronado and Ramon are not able to play well against top-level teams. Always hurts DR's chances.

Charlie Villanueva fighting to make his mark on Pistons, NBA

Royal Oak — Charlie Villanueva's body was drenched in sweat, having gone through a strenuous ultimate boxing workout in the effort to get himself ready for training camp.

After the disappointment of last season, one marred by injuries and inactivity, it was clear he would have to ratchet up his summer workouts to prepare himself for the competition to earn minutes and finally, live up to the free-agent contract he signed with the Pistons three summers ago.

At the suggestion of his financial manager, he found himself at Shut Up and Box in Royal Oak, using unconventional methods that are becoming increasingly popular in NBA circles.

"I'd never tried it so I said, 'Why not?'" Villanueva said. "The first time I did it, I was like 'Wow,' I saw how tired I got so fast."

He started a few months ago and it's become addictive to the eighth-year forward, after the initial awkwardness.

"Then I wanted to get better at this. Then it became, I want to do this all the time. I could see my body getting better and better," he said.

In the midst of those workouts, his year went from bad to worse upon hearing he was cut from the Dominican Republic National Team. Upon hearing the name of Kentucky and national team coach John Calipari, Villanueva grunted.

"The DR thing definitely stung," he said. "That's your country you're representing. They never gave me an opportunity to work out in the first place. I never worked out for these guys, it caught me off guard. I'm reading up on this and I'm like, 'Wow.'"

There were rumors of a secret workout in New York, where it was said Villanueva didn't measure up, an event Villanueva said "never happened."

"Now I have to go out and defend myself," he said. "Now everybody thinks I tried out and got cut and that was never the situation. Imagine the people who really don't know me. The people who just pick up a newspaper and sees the headline, 'Charlie Villanueva got cut from the Dominican Republic.' I'm an NBA player who gets cut from a national team that only has two other NBA guys on the team."

In addition to all of that, there was the penultimate — the whisper that wasn't so quiet from folks who wanted the Pistons to waive him under the amnesty clause, even though it wouldn't have helped the team in free agency.

"It burns me up. It just drove me. Instead of being upset, I said, this will pass and I will let my game do the talking," said Villanueva of the sum of everything that's occurred.

He shouldn't need much motivation at this point, and he's admitted the past year has humbled him beyond belief. But he says his body feels better than ever and he's ready to change the perception about being a talented underachiever.

"Definitely did not expect this. It's been three difficult years, real hard," he said. "They went by fast.

"Different situations each time (year). My lowest year was last year by far. At least I played my first two years. Then last year my body couldn't. The lockout played a role in it, not knowing when you'll go back to work. My mindset wasn't the same. Now I know I have to be back Oct. 1."

At the suggestion of Pistons strength and conditioning coach Arnie Kander, Villanueva has been doing sauna workouts, which help with metabolism, assist with detox and inflammation and having the training effect without beating the body up.

"I've been doing this for so long, it's become part of my routine," he said. "Even with the injuries, I've been consistent with the sauna, every since Arnie put me on the workout. On the road, I'll go to the sauna, get my workouts in. It's part of my DNA now."

Villanueva says it puts him in a more aggressive mindset, one he'll need in training camp in the effort to crack the rotation of big men to play alongside Greg Monroe.

"The body feels good; it's crazy because before I wouldn't be able to do it. I just couldn't, my body couldn't take it," he said.

He knows this season could possibly be one of his last chances to make his mark on this team and in the league in general. Even though he's 28, he's desperate to change the narrative.

Having his four-year-old son up from Toronto multiple times last season, Villanueva doesn't want his son's only memory of dad in the NBA being glued to the bench.

"I know he looks up to me," Villanueva said. "I don't know how long I'll be playing (in the NBA), but as long as I'm on the court, I'll try to do something positive."

Don't know if it's the real reason, looks kinda fishy. Maybe there were some issues between player and coach, there're some staements about Villanueva's bad attitude last year or maybe it was big insurance, who knows.
